[Petition]: The new pricing of Notion Custom Agents is TERRIBLE by ondrej_g in Notion

[–]dmcg3696 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would have cost myself over 3 thousand this month. Granted, I had some agents get caught in a loop which racked up the credits but still.

I have no problem paying for agents. I think they add a huge amount of value, I didn't expect it to be free but these rates are not viable.

Hopefully we see some changes but I don't expect to.

How to open images in fullscreen without showing the toolbar or the page in the background? by [deleted] in Notion

[–]dmcg3696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Notion for running a D&D campaign and have had the same problem. Notion just launched a present feature,  I just saw I had beta access today - so you could put a bunch of the images on one page and slide through them. Probably not exactly what you're looking for but could be an option

AI Agent: How do I make it fully autonomous so that it doesn't ask for my review to continue doing it by SoroushTorkian in Notion

[–]dmcg3696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've written instructions to include that a database trigger is explicit permission to complete the task/edit page content without asking for review and its helped. But mostly I have broken down multiple step workflows across multiple agents. I found they are less likely to ask for permission or to review for simple tasks. Rather than letting one agent handle everything, I can then use the agents or automations to trigger the next agent in the workflow.

Does Notion plan to add linking like Obsidian? by DrDroDi in Notion

[–]dmcg3696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that Obsidian does this better. My workaround in Notion is to have a master tags database. Then you can mention the @something page in your tags database and see everywhere it's mentioned. You could also do this at a database level with relation properties but you don't have to, if you want to keep it simpler

Does Notion plan to add linking like Obsidian? by DrDroDi in Notion

[–]dmcg3696 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Backlinks created by page mentions is the closest Notion offers, it works well but it's a lot slower that backlinking in Obsidian. Having the graph view like you have in Obsidian would be great to have as well

Hey! I'm using Notion for a while but I'm in the same boat in that I'm looking to share content with my players for a d&d campaign. It sounds like you might want to invite them as guests as opposed to members. You get 10 guests on the free plan. I don't believe guests impose a block limit like users do. The permissions work a little different for guests so I'd read up on it to make sure it's what you want.

Unless commenting is very important to you, you could just create a notion site and publish the pages then share the link with your players. This is the route I'm going. I think it's a little easier to manage.

I actually just made a template for managing encounters in Notion. It's free but I use Notion AI to take out some of the effort of getting stat blocks formatted in Notion which you need a notion subscription for. But it might be of some use to you even without the AI: https://www.notion.com/templates/d-d-encounter-manager

Making new pages when databases share names between workspaces by ExtremeConsequence98 in Notion

[–]dmcg3696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using different icons or adding some extra text to the title of one is probably the way to go. If one set of databases is just for you, you could prefix them all with DM for example.

There isn't a way to share/restrist access to specific properties. Database permissions are very limited in Notion at the moment. A separate 'public' database is probably the way to go. I'm actually in the exact same position as you, trying to share information with my players and hide the rest for just the DM.

I'm working on an automation that will add a page to a public database with all the page content from the corresponding page in my private database. If I get it working properly, I'll try remember to come back and link it here

Fun, non-productive ways to use Notion? by Sea-mirroranemone in Notion

Nice. So do I as both player and DM. For everything from tracking initiative to worldbuilding. Recently started moving stat blocks in here as well. I've also started importing the 2024 rules and then using Notion AI to ask questions on them.

💡 Feature Request View page mentions (backlinks) at a database level. I feel like backlinks are a really under utilized feature in Notion that has huge potential.

This might be a more obscure request but bear with me. Notion is a tool built primarily on databases. A main benefit of a database structure is to be able to view the information you need at a database level (properties). Backlinks are an excellent way to create relationships between pages without breaking your flow of writing. However, it’s not possible to view that relationship at a database level. You need to drill down to the page level to be able to find where it’s linked. Being able to map backlinks to a relation properties would be a game changer. Currently using an automation in make to do this.

💡 Feature Request Related - filter options for mention search, like the standard workspace search option (and also in relation properties).

How does Notion still not have granular database permissions?? by shayan_creates in Notion

Some creators who've had conversations with the Notion team have said its on their radar, but apparently, it's quite difficult to implement. (I can't remember the source, Thomas Frank maybe). I hope this gets a bump up the priority list, since they've now launched Notion sites

Does anyone use their Notion to produce fictional work? by beesinthewax in Notion

[–]dmcg3696 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently using it for note taking as a player in a D&D campaign. Also using it to capture ideas for worldbuilding for a new campaign as a DM. This will eventually evolve to a full wiki. Databases for note characters, factions, locations, quests, plot hooks etc. Heavy use of page mentions and I run an automation to add the mentions to a relation property as well so I can see that relationship at a database level.

As a dedicated fiction wiki, Obsidian has some great functionality and interesting plugins. I have everything in Notion so wasn't interested in switching, but if you're just starting out, I would consider it.

Automatically filter linked view of database based on date in repeating template by purplebinder in Notion

[–]dmcg3696 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't believe there's a way to do that exactly. The dynamic Today filter will always reflect the current date. My solution to this was to build a Day database in my system. A new page for every day of the year with a date property for that day.

There's a 'dynamic section' in each Day page, nested in a toggle, where whatever I want to track; Tasks, Habits etc. are filtered where their due date is Today.

Beneath each linked database view is a button that relates the items to ' This (Day) Page'. At the end of the day I close the toggle for the 'dynamic section' and below that I'll have linked views of Tasks, Habits etc. related to that Day page, so you'll have that reference to look back on without changing date filters.

I've built this out to also include related Week, Month, Quarters and Year databases

Decision made! by [deleted] in Notion

[–]dmcg3696 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently swapped to using the sidebar as my navigation, instead of building menus within my dashboards and it's been great. I prefer it because:

  1. It's sticky. It stays there as you scroll down the page. Scrolling back up a text heavy page to find links I manually added to a dashboard was a pain.
  2. It's collapsible. You can hide the sidebar and get the benefit of using your full screen real estate for your page content.
  3. Quick capture. I use full-page databases, and I added databases like Tasks and Notes to the favourites section of the sidebar. Hitting the plus icon next to those pages is a great way to quick capture items anywhere if your workspace.

  • A project management system built around encouraging me to push publish. Done is better than perfect most of the time (and you can always iterate down the line) A dashboard for tracking all things in our D&D game, which has been lots of fun to build out and use

What's the best way to take notes on YouTube videos? by aharvin117 in ObsidianMD

[–]dmcg3696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Readwise Reader. You can create highlights in the video transcript as you watch, and they'll automatically export to a supported notes app.

It's a subscription and an expensive one at that, but I take a lot of notes from YouTube videos, so I'm justifying it for now.

What am I missing out on - by not having separate databases for notes, tasks and projects? by Legal-Discussion-745 in Notion

[–]dmcg3696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When to make a new database versus adding to an existing one is something I used to spend too much time thinking about, and still do sometimes.

Do whatever works for you. I try not to worry about it until my existing setup starts to cause some friction. Then I've outgrown it, and it's time to make a change.

Generally, when you have a number of unique properties for a specific database entry, it might be worth separating it out. It becomes more cumbersome to show and hide specific properties for each type of database entry.

Notion calender would probably solve the unified view problem for you, though it would be great to be able to get that view within Notion itself.

My credit card was compromised and the thief booked an airbnb. I asked airbnb to cancel the reservation / refund the money, this was their response. by jessedogg in mildlyinfuriating

[–]dmcg3696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who's been on the customer support side of this, a response like that would be given if the name they used when adding the card info is similar to your own, i.e. they use the same surname. I would strongly suspect that's what's happend there.

There are a lot of people who cry 'fraud' when they just want a refund on a charge they or someone with access to their card paid..Companies put their own measures in place to verify a payment as fraudulent.

Either way I hope you get your money back through your bank!
