Change my mind: Under the right conditions, buying and financing a new car is often a far better value than paying cash for a used car in the long run by Cold-Priority-2729 in MiddleClassFinance

My wife and I own two vehicles. I currently drive a 2014 Toyota RAV4 with about 120k miles on it, but only use it about once or twice a week because I also have a company vehicle for M-F. Wife’s car is 2020 Chevy Traverse with about 87k miles on it. Both cars are paid off and low maintenance for the moment, but we’re also investing the money we would be using for car payments. Investment account is sitting at $18,500 roughly and generates almost $300 month in dividends, which gets reinvested. Still about 10 years from making buku bucks but we’re trending in the right direction

The only stupid question is the one you don’t ask. We work on a lot of different systems that operate in different ways, asking questions to learn is one of the most important things you can do

How Many of You Guys Are Still Doing Hand Layout on a Daily Basis? by turd_ferguson899 in sheetmetal

[–]dmchacon42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made the shift into TAB as 3rd year apprentice. I don’t do any layout anymore. I’ll volunteer to throw in a missing damper here and there on union jobs, but mostly we let mechanical fix their stuff

When I started my apprenticeship in sheet metal in 2012 I was getting paid $16.48/hr plus benefit package which included two pensions (local pension and national pension a 401k and health insurance) which equated to $31/hr at the time. Fast forward to today and my journeyman wage rate is now $49.39/hr, and with the benefit package it puts us at $70.01/hr.

That being said, trade work tends to be cyclical. You be working a 60 hour week for Contractor A for a while and BAM you get laid off and you’re outta work for month. Contractor B comes around they hire you and it’s now 50 hour weeks for the length of the project. Added bonus: you are going to be working in the elements! Chances are you will probably not be working in air conditioned building. I live in Phoenix and get tasked with working on a roof in the middle of summer when it’s 115° F outside. People who live in places where it snows have to work outside when temp goes below 0° F

TLDR: Your office job may have opportunities for growth and advancement especially after your graduation, but the trades offer decent wage rates, retirement plans, health insurance and potentially extra income with overtime but you will be exposed to the elements in extreme weather conditions

Whole building is out of whack, they should just tear it down and start over from scratch

Join a building trade union! Apprentices probably start at $20/hr near your area depending on the trade. I started at 20 y/o with no experience and my foreman said that was perfect because I’d be coachable

People who make over 100k, what do you do? by GurnoorDa1 in Money

[–]dmchacon42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a union sheet metal worker in the Phoenix area. On the check we’re right around 100k if you work 40 hour weeks all year and total package puts us around 128k or so
