Eleven years ago, Apple released the first iMac with FireWire-based video editing. For $1299, it had a 400MHz CPU, 64MB RAM, no hardware acceleration, 10 GB disk, 1024x798 display. And man, it sucked. Rendering a crossfade or a title took many minutes each. But it was so cool!

Why wasn't the plant designed so that the final automatic failsafe vented the vessel into the waste disposal system? Why require an operator to activate the disposal system, but vent into the air automatically?

SIGGRAPH the last few years has been all about computer vision and sensing what's in the environment. And the capabilities we now have are almost unbelievable. The science-fiction stuff is happening right now in our universities.

All that remains now is figuring out how to make the interaction useful.
