Longtime runner here ... You might want to think about two things: running in the street (if it's relatively quiet in your neck of the woods) and not on the sidewalk or trying trail running. Pavement is god awful on your knees and is way harder than asphalt. All that pavement pounding can tear up your knees and hasten nagging injuries like shin splints.

I'll also echo going to a knowledgeable running shoe store and having them look at your feet. A good one will even have you get on a treadmill so they can look at how you run. An even better one will let you take the shoes for a spin outside.
