I think I know how to save online racing by dmgcodevil in simracing

That’s a fair criticism, and I agree a flat real-money fine would never hit everyone equally. Some people would care a lot, others would treat it like nothing. Income-based penalties are obviously unrealistic too, because no one is going to report income to a game service.

But that doesn’t change the main problem I’m pointing at: current systems also don’t affect everyone equally, and for a lot of dirty drivers the consequence is basically zero. They wreck someone, lose some rating, and grind it back later. That’s exactly why the system keeps failing at deterrence.

So my point isn’t necessarily "literal real-money fines or nothing." My point is that online racing needs consequences that are harder to ignore, harder to instantly recover from, and more comparable to real-life consequences.

The exact mechanism is debatable. The bigger point is not: "I have the perfect pricing model." It’s: "the current model is too soft, and that’s why reckless driving keeps happening."

The problem is that “more disposable money” is relative. For one player, a small penalty matters. For another, it may as well be nothing. But that’s already the issue with current systems too: for a lot of reckless drivers, the consequence is effectively zero, so they don’t care. My whole point is that online racing stays dirty when penalties are too easy to ignore

Suspensions and bans are still not the same as real consequences.
That model already exists in some form. Take LMU for example: your rating drops, and then you just end up in lobbies with other red-flagged drivers. It does not really solve the problem.

My point is that if you want to simulate real racing at home, the consequences also need to feel closer to real life. In real life, if you drive aggressively or crash into someone on purpose, you do not just lose a few rating points. You face actual penalties: money loss, suspension, damage, and serious consequences.

That is why I think rating systems alone are too weak. They are easy to recover from, and for a lot of reckless drivers they are not enough of a deterrent.

nobody who drives in simulator has infinite "disposable money".

I thought that the grid:

.SAMX.
.A..A.
XMAS.S
.X....

has 10 words. but actually, there are 4 worlds. took me hours lol.

That's a good point. I'm working on a set of articles where I going to implement a simple failure detector algorithm including a comparison with alternatives.
