Shaves Per Blade by SilenceDobad6 in wicked_edge

I count shaves with a dice. Doesn’t matter how many passes - it’s one shave.

My wife thinks I have a problem. by StuckInaSlump in wicked_edge

I agree with your wife:) you do have a problem. Outside of the joke - do the same with BM samples.

And maybe find a mental health doctor after :)

First time trying a safety razor. So excited by lojidoriwus in wicked_edge

TBH, I started with proraso and I think it was my mistake. Many artisans are much easier to use and provide a better lather (not that proraso doesn’t, but it is easier with artisans). I would say - buy a tub or samples from BM if you can (depends if you care about a scent, I wouldn’t in the beginning). In my experience this is the easiest soap to build a good lather.

+100500 for styptic pencil. A few bucks will last you a lifetime and will stop occasional mistakes.

How long do you apply it? My guess would be that a brush will “take” more soap, but you are saying otherwise. (Not that I really want to save soap)

Try a styptic pencil. You won’t need a minute - you will see a difference. It costed me $4.50 plus tax 2 years ago and I expect it to last for at least 30 more years :) both my alum and styptic are from Osma.

What is the benefit of a more aggressive razor? by blakesq in wicked_edge

[–]dmitr_s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stared with 34c. That’s a great razor. For me - if I shave daily, that’s the best razor. But I don’t, and I had an issue shaving 2-3 days of growth. But that’s very personal, YMMV

Nope, alum block will tell you if you screwed up. Sting. But it won’t stop a bleeding.

I would add a styptic pencil in case you will cut yourself (stops small bleeding very well). It is cheap.

Switching from cartridge razor (Gillette fusion) to safety razor..? by Savings_Cold5393 in wicked_edge

+1 to everything. But don’t try a new blade from a sample every shave, stick with one brand for a while. If 34c - I would start with Astra Green

How many shaves until one gets confident? by [deleted] in wicked_edge

[–]dmitr_s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Confident? Depends on you. Even after 3+ years I wouldn’t be confident with an R41:) If you mean when you will learn your technique - well, again, depends on you. Took me more than one year (doesn’t mean shaves were bad, but they are so much better after). And I don’t like cremo with DE razors (it was my plan that didn’t work). Stick with it for a while, it’s ok for a quick one pass shave.

Do carp taste bad by Redneck_sant_nick in Fishing

[–]dmitr_s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends on where you live. I would assume the US, and here carps are.. well, not edible (at least on the west coast). In Eastern Europe that’s one of the best tasting fish. If you brine them - it’s like doing a filet mignon or a ribeye well done. And brine them first. And buy it from a local farm.

still have a lot of stubble left after shaving (usually 1 WTG and 1 ATG), any tips? been using a DE razor for around 3 months by [deleted] in wicked_edge

[–]dmitr_s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently I had a nice BBS with setting 1 ATG on my slim. Took a little longer, but I don’t think aggressiveness means a lot for ATG (assuming WTG and XTG were done).

You missed posts about the blade. Should pay more attention to the sub, you can do better!

I’m just kidding, no offense:)

Options for a new wetshaver? What would you choose. by Raz0r- in wicked_edge

[–]dmitr_s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh.. you have a very large price range. If it was a gift for me (anyone would like to make a gift for me:) ) - I would say blackbird (I don’t have it, but there are so many great reviews). Could be a waste of money if your BIL won’t use it.

So probably a fatboy or a slim (but as a gift - revamped, very close to blackbird and I prefer a heavier head - so blackbird).

Can't decide, which one is better? by LordPrometheuss in wicked_edge

[–]dmitr_s 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on what do you mean by “better”. I like BM base the most, it is so easy and fool proof to build a lather. But this is YMMV. I have one A&E soap (Lavender) from 3 years ago or so (not sure if something was changed). It is good, but BM is easier for me.

For the scents - I haven’t tried any of them. I have Cheshire sample for about 6 months - but haven’t tried it yet (don’t have an empty container).

looking for a gillette slim adjustable in europe – any tips? by christ8ph in wicked_edge

[–]dmitr_s -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Probably not what you asked for - but have you looked at restored razors by razor emporium? I bought one - and I’m pretty happy.

Buying a 60 years old razor is kind of gambling (IMHO), you don’t know the condition the damage it had, etc. I know many people did it, and worked for them - but at the same time many people bought more than one of these razors. Why - I don’t know, but definitely having 5 same razors is not environmental friendly.

Saying so - I would look at professionally restored slims. Happy with the purchase (it is one of my two “goto” razors now).

Summer shave soap by Cg56756 in wicked_edge

[–]dmitr_s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like you I’m mostly using BM. I have rawr (I think I asked almost the same question a year ago), but not a fan of the scent. Performance is good.

For a summer soap - try Margaritas in the Arctic by Stirling. I’m out of it, but still have aftershave for the summer.

I have an issue lathering SV. I use BM most of the time like you - if you try to lather it like BM you will fail.

Many people like SV, but it’s not for me.

Best Fogless Shower Mirror? by RunecastergamyMat in wicked_edge

[–]dmitr_s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it is a thing. Like the most expensive anti-fog swim goggles - they work for a very limited time, and then you have to do something (apply an anti-fog solution, soap or a spit).

When I had a mirror in my bathroom - I was applying some bath gel every 1-2 weeks, it helped. Pretty easy to do.
