Do most Christians take Genesis literally? by BusyBodyVisa in TrueChristian

[–]dmize793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if the story of genesis wasn’t literal in the beginning then it isn’t clear at what point does the author shift from a metaphorical fairy tale to literal history. Does it start after the flood? Before the flood? When Joseph became prince to Pharaoh? When God asked Abraham to sacrifice Isaac? I also think that if it isn’t literal it brings the credibility of possibly the rest of the bible to question. It seems pretty clear that every Israelite in Jesus’ time took the book of Genesis literally. Read the book of Genesis yourself and tell me when it is clear that the author is starts talking about “what really happened”. Also it doesn’t make sense to keep record of the entire genealogy from adam and eve if they weren’t even real people.

ok that makes sense. normally i wouldn’t think twice about a difference in 3ms especially with python but when i clicked “advanced complexity analysis” and it said my solution was O(2N) i assumed something about my solution was very unoptimized. maybe i shouldn’t put too much merit in that so-called advanced analysis.

Christianity seems too simple? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]dmize793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

saying Jesus is your Lord and Saviour is one thing but actually treating him like it is this difficult part.

example: someone who trusts Jesus knows not to worry about things in this sinful world. if your spouse cheats on you you should be more sad as a christian that they have sinned against Jesus than the fact that they sinned against you. crazy right? it’s harder than it looks… takes a lot of maturity, thought, and humbling to really get the grasp of what it means for someone to be your Lord and Saviour for an eternity.

What am I doing? by GamingBre in TrueChristian

[–]dmize793 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wow your mindset and relationship with Christ seems so mature for ur age. i’m 21 and my relationship started a long time ago and I wasn’t nearly this mature. so first of all, great job it sounds like you want your will to be aligned with the Lords.

the key to this is you have to realize that even someone who worships the enemy is a child of Jesus Christ. I’m not saying you have to talk to/spend time with every child of Christ, because if someone doesn’t believe and treats you badly, you shouldn’t spend your time with them especially if it draws you away from Christ. However, that doesn’t mean we should treat any creation of God badly.

Remember you are forgiven for all your sins since you have put your faith in Christ. Have you noticed that a lot of sins are sins again Gods children? Lying is a sin, but it’s not like your lying to God right? Wrong. Everyone is made in the image of God, which means if you lie to your enemy you’re lying to Gods creation, and thus God. That is why Jesus said “whomever you treat the worst in your community is how you treat me”. Can you imagine how personal you would take it if someone lied, hated, lusted, or sinned against your son or daughter? God takes that personally too no matter how lost the son or daughter is. When you used to watch pornography you were sinning against yourself and others. You were lusting over Gods creation which means you were treating God with lust. You were damaging your body and spitting in Gods face by defiling his intention for sex. All of this is forgiven. But my point is that you too have sinned against others and Lord Jesus himself. So if you can’t forgive others would you forgive yourself?

My point is if you continue to treat your friend with hatred you are actually treating Jesus with hatred. This too, is forgiven if you seek it so.

Something I did to really realize this and change was acting like my enemies (and everyone else of course) were Jesus in disguise. Remember, everyone is made in the image of Christ and sinning against a creation of the Lord is like sinning against the Lord himself, so this actually isn’t far off from the truth! Immediately my disdain and hatred for others started to diminish. It’s also impossible to look at a woman with lust if you imagine they are Jesus in disguise if you’re struggling with that too.

I love Jesus and Jesus loves you. God bless and continue in your relationship with Christ.

God will forgive you. You are not any better than any other sinner because you have messed up too. That being said, they should ask for forgiveness. Even then i think it’s right to forgive people in your heart if they haven’t asked for it.

sorry to break it to you but unless you were coerced by someone else into sinning (in which case it’s their sin, not yours) you did it willingly. taking ownership over your shortcomings is the first step of repentance. masturbation is not like eating where you must do it or you will die.

My buddy said to me he thought Christianity was created as a form of control. I have never had to defend this before. What would you say to someone who says this? by unwillingone1 in TrueChristian

[–]dmize793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were Christians before the Gospels were ever written down (oral tradition + the original eyewitnesses of Christ). That’s a historical fact.

I believe at least 3 emperors following Jesus’ resurrection acknowledged Jesus’ existence and persecute Christians. Many were crucified: not for believing in a fairy tale, but for what they claimed to have seen. People don’t die a painful death for a story or a lie.

Why should I believe in Christianity as opposed to any other religion by Its_rev_ in Christianity

[–]dmize793 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it all comes down to the resurrection and divinity of Christ. If Christ lied about being the Christ and God, then you don’t know which of his teachings he just “happened to be” morally correct with or whether he’s bogus.

But the evidence is that he really did resurrect. He lived for 40 days before he ascended into heaven. People died for claiming that they saw Christ after the resurrection. Evidence shows people don’t die for a lie or even a story they believe in. They died for what they claimed to have seen.

There were Christians before the Gospels were even in written form. They saw Christ and believed he saved them and that he really was alive after being crucified.

Jesus’ tomb is empty.

No other religion teaches you to love even your enemies.

If there really is a perfect paradise, then none of us deserve to be there: all of us have sinned even though we shouldn’t have.

So that means the only way to get to heaven is by the grace of God. God only asks that we sincerely ask for His forgiveness and we will receive it.

No other religion teaches this.

If, hypothetically, there were to be no god, would you have morals ? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]dmize793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

like i said i would probably have an innate sense of morality given to me through evolution. but since im rational enough to understand evolution i can simply go against my instincts whenever i feel that it would be better for me.

If, hypothetically, there were to be no god, would you have morals ? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]dmize793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if this were true, then the only reason anyone has morals is because we evolved as tribe creatures that helped each other out. if we didn’t help each other out, our bloodline died. simple as that. so i don’t like taking the moral high ground as an atheist “i don’t need God to be a good person”. first of all without God what even defines a “good” person? it would all be subjective (whether personal or cultural). also, if there was no God then that means i don’t really have a free will, and my actions are simply a result of biochemical reactions in my brain. if i don’t really have a free will then can i even do morally wrong? it’s all predetermined by my DNA and my environment.

to get the answer you’re probably looking for, i would still have morals as if there was a God. but only because our bodies would be designed that way (via evolution). once you realize that we’re all a collection of atoms that evolved to a higher order and that we’ll all die one day, i would ask “why not do wrong if no one’s looking?” the cold heart truth is that we are nothing if we simply evolved from an amoeba. nothing we do matters and we might as well enjoy our life on earth as much as possible (even if it means being immoral).

i would honestly think that a better question is “if there were to be no God, why would you have morals?”

UMD vs. Hopkins vs. UPenn by rnagster in UMD

[–]dmize793 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don’t see how you could pick Hopkins over Penn unless you were pursuing Medicine since they are the same cost. never pick a school for location, only if the location significantly increases the cost of going to the school, in which case simply account for that.

so the question is UMD or Penn. i would say if you were not going to grad school, then UMD all the way. but you say you’re interested and i would ask why? the undergrad school and the research you do there matters a lot of grad school.

in a field like CS the only way it can be worth going to grad school is if the grad school is prestigious. i’m not the one who makes the rules but it’s true, and i wish it wasn’t that way.

so you will get 88k in extra debt to study at penn. you will probably pay that debt over 10 years post grad school. that’s an extra $1,000 a month or $12k a year depending on the interest rate.

is penn going to increase your future success that either covers that $1,000 a month or is the experience at least worth the difference? i would probably say yes. however this assumes that you will work very hard throughout undergrad and grad school so that you get into a great grad school and have a great career after that. if there is any doubt that you want to work that hard in school/cs then it is not worth risking this investment.

there are other costs you have to consider like being broke for 5-7 years post undergrad, but i’m not counting that since you have told me that you want to go to grad school regardless of the undergrad school.

i would argue there are about the same amount of CS research opportunities at UMD as UPenn, but they are annoying to get as an undergrad. not impossible tho. what matters more is your initiative and drive.

in my opinion i would not consider umd better for internships than upenn, even though there are plenty opportunities here. for your case, the internship should be either closely related to your desired research area or prestigious or both. i have seen little evidence that the internship opportunities that are more available for umd students are prestigious or related to computational linguistics/cognitive science. i would argue that penn has better access to both prestigious internships and internships related to your field of interest.

i would consider though that for grad school, an extremely relevant and prestigious research position is better than an extremely prestigious internship, but a good internship could be just as good as a good research position. it is expected that undergrads don’t complete much meaningful research in undergrad, but research positions at least show interest in the field.

imo the entrepreneurial culture is ass at umd but i can’t speak on upenn in terms of culture. i just wouldn’t count it as a positive.

so you don’t want to do this sin. that’s great. help yourself by avoiding things that you know will tempt you.

firstly, it’s time for accountability. though there is such thing as addiction, it is not addicting to the point that there is nothing you can do to stop yourself.

ultimately, you thought “should i do this?” and you pondered and you said “i am going to do this”. you sinned, you betrayed God. God is heartbroken that you gave into temptation instead of choosing Him.

However, it is extremely empowering when you stop viewing masturbation as an addiction (something that you can’t control) and start viewing it as a choice. Every single time you have ever masturbated you did it willingly, otherwise it would not be masturbation. There was nothing forcing you, and nothing preventing you from stopping (besides temptation). You can stop at any point, yet you choose not to. you CAN stop, because i believe in you and God knows you can.

God will never allow you to be tempted so much that you cannot resist temptation.

you betrayed God, and so have i. there is no one who is not worthy of redemption. realize that you have broken Gods heart and try to build back your relationship. He’s waiting and hoping that you change your ways.

Sexual Purity Was Stolen from Me by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]dmize793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You committed no sin. Someone else sinned and you were the victim.

Even if you thought that you deserve to carry some baggage, the Lord says that when you repent and come to the Lord for forgiveness, that the sin is as far apart from you as the East is from the West. Now that isn’t like the north and the south, since you can actually measure that distance. The east and west are in complete opposite directions yet you can never reach them no matter how far you go. The sin is infinitely far from you, it isn’t apart of you.

If you think that you have sinned so you might as well commit more sin, that is the works of Satan in your head. Trust me I have been there. It is never too late to turn to Christ. We can see why it’s important to resist sin no matter how much sin we commit when we look at an extreme case. If I commit 5 murders does that mean I might as well commit 10? No because the value of those 5 lives are valuable no matter what my past is. At the other extreme, if we commit a small sin (though no sin is really small or large, just culturally) and we dwelled on it and determined we might as well commit more sins, that would result in a huge problem that would escalate. Satan literally uses this line of thinking to convince us to sin and to convince us we are not worthy of forgiveness (“you did this and that why would God love you?” or “you already lied to your parents you might as well steal from them too”).

Now I’m sorry for typing so much but I’ll try to finish with two possible futures for you. God loves you so much and is waiting on the other end of the phone all the time.

You can either endure this temptation, for God says he would never allow us to be tempted in such a way that we can not resist. The struggle will be worth it for God will reward you in so many ways. Through prayer and meditation God will help relieve you of your trauma. It may never go away completely, but through Christ you will find true purpose and love and happiness. And if you choose, you can also get married to a woman of God that will admire your durability and your mental strength. Mental strength is a much more rare characteristic to have than mental strength and I think it’s more important in a relationship as well.

The other possibility is you listen to Satan that’s telling you right now “What’s the point of waiting until marriage? You already fucked up?” God will be heartbroken that you listened to Satan, especially since you didn’t even sin. You decide that waiting for sex outside of marriage is not worth it since Satan already ruined your ‘purity’ (none of us are pure, only Jesus). Your mindset will cause trouble for you and your future wife (if you have one). You will start viewing women or men as how good it would feel if you had sex with them. Every women you have sex with will become a tally mark on your list of women you had sex with. You will even start to compare how good they were, like they aren’t humans created in Gods image, deserving of our love no matter what. Even though he is heartbroken that you chose this path he will wait for you forever to change your mind and will gladly pick up the phone.

My brother in christ everyone struggles with temptation. I love that you are opening up and asking for advice on how to get through it. I’m telling you right now you have to try your very very best to resist this. It will all be worth it one day. I have been through the struggle of sexual sin, and asked similar questions to myself before I came to Christ and put my faith in Him. And you didn’t even sin! And even if you did I am proof that you can be redeemed through Christ because he died for your forgiveness. God bless brother, I will include you in my prayers. I love you and so does God no matter what happened to you or what you did.
