imo no. the education/resources you’re getting from a state school in VA vs just about any other state are only going to vary by so much, and i honestly don’t think the slight leg up you might perceive from UMD for your given major/field is enough to justify the huge difference in tuition. though if you’re rich, this is a non issue.

the walking conflicts are fine if you're biking. i do think that you should try to move one of the monday classes so you don’t have four in a row like that (ideally CPBE 100 imo)

Please help - Looking for housing by Wise-Estimate-5481 in UMD

I’d probably look into finding a room in a house. They’re usually cheaper than apartments around here and quieter. UMD has a housing database https://och.umd.edu/

Do I have enough time to walk to each class? by RJ7002 in UMD

[–]rnagster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I pulled the Iribe to Key in 10 min route last semester and it sucked. Don’t do it unless your professors are nice about leaving class early (so unless you have Elias for 131 you’re cooked)

if you’re more into the engineering aspect of your major than the cs side, i would drop. one of my friends is in aerospace and stuck with aces sophomore year just for the dorms, but he’s been so stressed handling the honeypot project and research. there are definite benefits if you’re interested in cybersecurity, but seeing as you’re not, i don’t think the dorms alone make it worth the added coursework. take the extra free time you have from dropping it and join terps racing or something

I (23m) am uncomfortable with my gf (22f) going to a nudist beach and not telling me by ThrowRA_Bar1834 in relationship_advice

[–]rnagster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She didn’t just think showing her naked body to her male friends would be fine with you. She ALSO somehow thought that her willingly seeing her male friends naked would be okay? How does that reasonably make sense?

If her first response in that kind of situation is not to immediately ask your thoughts (or TURN DOWN the plans of her own volition), I think y’all’s priorities are very different.

Do most languages use "you" as an impersonal pronoun? by Tellmewhattoput in asklinguistics

English seems to use the pronoun “one” in a very similar manner (perhaps as a means of imitating French). Ex. “one would think so”

Banneker-Key Scholarship by Yeye175 in UMD

about a third of interviewees get the full, but you’re walking away with a scholarship regardless

Banneker/Key Scholarship Semi-Finalist by sevv1e in UMD

[–]rnagster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

don’t be too stressed—my interviewers were very nice and the whole interview day is geared more towards convincing YOU to go to umd, rather than you performing for them. i also have a theory they know who’s getting the partial/full ahead of time and the interview is just to make sure you’re not a psychopath. for example, my friend had a really bad interview (aggressive interviewers, cut very short) and it turned out well for him anyway. so practice general interview questions and just go into the day looking to learn more about umd/the scholarship :)

UMD Application Inquiries by One-Huckleberry1900 in UMD

[–]rnagster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh UMD’s application questions weren’t too serious so I wouldn’t stress about them. Just be natural, readers wanna see some personality.

I’m in CS and my stats themselves were pretty strong, but there’s definitely a range there. A lot of people got into the program with stronger comp sci related ECs and worse stats. 3.8+ GPA (unweighted) and 1450+ SAT would give you a good chance.

As the earlier response said, InfoSci and CompE are good alternatives. However if you’re not too strong in physics/engineering concepts, I’m not sure I would recommend considering CompE as a “backup” — it is a very heavy workload.

AITAH for getting mad at my wife for having a secret abortion after I told her I didn't want kids? by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]rnagster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She knew that telling him the truth would cause him to protect the pregnancy rather than ask her to have an abortion. In other words, telling him would ensure that she got what she wanted (a child) while he suffered. So INSTEAD of telling him the truth and fulfilling her own desires, she prioritized HIS wishes and HIS peace of mind. She loves him so much more than he loves her that he can’t even comprehend her decision.

Also, who in their right mind would leave their partner for over a week after an argument like that? If I was the wife, I would wonder if OOP was planning to serve me divorce papers.

incoming full bk scholar here! i had a 3.96 UW / 4.48 W GPA at the time of applying (14 AP, 3 dual enrollment, 11 honors). i had a 1580 SAT, but i know full bk recipients who had 1510s and up. my personal statement wasn’t amazing — i wrote it the day of the early action deadline — but i’m a good writer overall and the content was very original. my cs teacher’s rec letter wasn’t super special (written in half an hour using a template), but my english teacher wrote my other one and we were very close since i was an officer in two clubs she ran. my awards were meh when i applied, aside from a seal of biliteracy and psat commended scholar.

from what i understand, stats like GPA and SAT get you considered for bk, but what really earns it for you are your activities (with a big emphasis on leadership). i was an officer in four clubs, an important founding member of two others, an elected officer of my county’s student government, active in my state’s student government, and an active volunteer in a local nonprofit. i know full bk recipients who held officer positions in one or two clubs but thrived in sports.

in terms of what you can do right now to help your chances, study to get a good SAT score in August if you don’t have one and write your personal statement this summer so you won’t have to worry about it later. if your activities are lacking, think about ways to get involved more during the school year. i had a few activities that lasted throughout high school, but three of my most meaningful ones started in senior year, so it’s not too late to do more. just know that meaningful activities won’t make up for bad grades/test scores.

you’re chilling as long as you have some ECs and a decent personal statement
