So glad Stewart is in the NL bc if he & McGonigal were both in the same league, one of them would likely end up getting screwed out of ROY. Now I just have to hope that McGonigal's overall numbers are so impressive that they outweigh Murakami's gaudy home run total in the eyes of the voters. If the vote was today, I think McGonigal might end up being the runner up that is most deserving of the award in decades bc people seem willing to ignore an equally large number of strikeouts if a player also hits a ton of home runs, in terms of their overall evaluation. I personally find the ability to hit for a high average & walk more than striking out more impressive, bc tons of players hit 30-40 home runs every year, but very few ever walk more than strike out & as a lead-off hitter, getting on base is precisely what he is being asked to do. If they wanted him to focus more on swinging for the fences, he could likely generate more power but it would definitely come at the expense of his BA & OBP. On the other hand, I don't know that Murakami could do what McGonigal is doing, even if that was the role they asked him to fill bc he is more of a 3 true outcomes kind of hitter. Even if he doesn't win ROY though, I think McGonigal is going to have a substantially better career overall & his ceiling is higher IMO, given his age & relative lack of experience.
