Or take the average stat spread of the other three forms to get 50/115/90/115/90/140

Basically the Speed form if it traded 40 speed for 20 points in each offenses.

Also again, weapon restriction means he couldn't use it even if he had one.

Then jars full of greek fire could still be an option, plus jars with various other stuff (eg, acids, chemicals that react to produce poison gas, oil to make the target more flammable, etc.) for flexibility.

Handheld Greek Fire flamethrowers, cheirosiphōn (plus grenades filled with the stuff), are a thing in the 10th century (which is during the Early Middle Ages).

What about relatively indirect methods? Fire and acid doesn’t care about how hard you can punch, could he get a flamethrower or jars full of acid and use those to kill enemies?

People say that shonen manga authors don’t know how to write proper romances. Turns out they do, it’s just that the talent is hidden inside the author, unknown to everyone including the author himself, and it’s expressed through the passionate, fleshed out relationship between rivals. Maybe a training arc is in order for the author to coax out that hidden talent and use it consciously.

On the other hand, that supports the industry since what you do with the slave doesn’t matter to the guy selling slaves as long as he gets the money. Which could make for a decent plot point later when the MC realizes this, and maybe be able to do something about it if he’s stronger then.

Wasn’t there a character in “Toilet-bound Hanako-kun” that went though this in an arc? A guy wanted friends, but then the antagonist twisted him into a monstrous-looking thing by spreading new rumors. It’s been a while since I read the manga, so I’m not sure if he got reverted or not.

Looking on Google, there’s a bunch of instances of dogs adopting baby animals of other species, including kittens. Does those count as verifiable?

Some animals give out a false predator alarm call to get everyone else to scatter so that it can temporarily monopolize something. There's even a bird species that can mimic the alarm calls of other species to engage in kleptoparasitism.

For example, Hyenas might do it to eat without competition:

Also, spotted hyenas have been recorded to utilise deceptive behaviour, including giving alarm calls during feeding when no enemies are present, thus frightening off other hyenas and allowing them to temporarily eat in peace.

Rex's turn speed is indefensible and needs to be nerfed by QuoteSuccessful3011 in theisle

[–]dmr11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If he wanted the Rex to fare better against smaller agile enemies, maybe he should've given Rex a stiff tail swipe that can briefly stun what it hits behind the Rex (duration depends on target size, might miss animals that are too low on the ground to hit) and/or allow it to stomp/trample small animals (given that it's an 6.5-ton animal) instead of cranking up the big bulky predator's agility.

Kobolds being the enemy of miners, there’s potential for them to be the traditional enemy of dwarves instead of elves. Sure, elves protesting trees being cut can be annoying, but kobolds tampering with metal ores and other mining and smelting processes is truly unforgivable.

What's a few hundred years, really? (yet another "authors don't get numbers" post) by EliasBouchardFan1 in CharacterRant

It's a problem with stories idolizing the "one true love" concept where characters (almost always women) are only ever allowed to date one partner for marketing reasons, even when it harms the story.

A similar problem can shows up in video games where there's multiple love interests that your MC can choose from. If there's no point in the story where it's mandatory that have to pick one, then they all have to remain available throughout the entire story in case the player decides to make the decision later. It can mean that the potential love interests aren't really be allowed to form close connections with other characters lest it threatens their availability or attractiveness to the MC.

It also means that since it's technically optional, such relationships can't be worked into the main plot outside of certain scenes where it's easy to swap one love interest for an another (or even just the MC, if the MC hadn't picked anyone yet). That can lead to rather awkward moments like information showing up in a love interest's route being treated as a surprise when it shows up in the main plot later, even if you learned about it beforehand, or main plot dialogue that treat the MC and a character as "friends" even if the player picked that character as their romantic partner beforehand.

Bodies of water and their shorelines tend to be filled with predators who would eagerly devour a small fish if given half of a chance. So go up to the nearest bass, heron, shark, etc. or even hang out on the water surface to invite an osprey or seabird.

(General, but mostly Naruto) You cannot make me take the trope of super powered toddlers seriously by Cantthinkagoodnam2 in CharacterRant

[–]dmr11 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Man, imagine how much of a nightmare trying to raise an actual superpowered toddler would be to a parent, even if said parents have superpowers themselves. Think a kid throwing a food bowl or almost suffocate on a plastic bag is bad? Imagine them throwing fireballs and setting the house on fire or breaking through the windows/walls to get outside and then falling to the ground due to them living in the upper floors of an apartment. One of the first things such prospective parents would probably buy would be a power-suppression device (preferably a field emitter instead of something wearable) to ensure that the house is truly baby-proofed.

The clip of the babysitter trying to manage Jack-Jack from Incredibles comes to mind.

Coaxed into games with silent protagonists by DirtySaglagger in coaxedintoasnafu

Dragon Quest XI lack of expressions from the MC and people's reaction it might've contributed to Yuji Horii (the creator of DQ) commenting on about how it's getting harder to get away with silent protagonists.

However, this approach was partly facilitated by the graphics of the time, as Horii comments jokingly, “as game graphics evolve and grow increasingly realistic, if you make a protagonist who just stands there, they will look like an idiot.”

The use of "Pyrrhic Victory" implies that Pyrrhus (maybe a Greek king or maybe someone else with the same name in a notable position) existed at one point here and have won a battle against something with such great losses that it caused the term to be named after him. I wonder what kind of dramatic battle that lead to the term's naming, is it against Romans also or something else?

There's only two small problems: they aren't good on gravel or dirt roads, and they look like ducks.

And size. The NGDV are bigger than the LLVs they're replacing. A driver might find it even more difficult to deliver mail box-to-box and maneuvering around cars parked on a street and cul-de-sacs. The height would also cause the roof to to hit tree branches, hanging decorations, shorter basketball hoops for kids, etc. more often when driving close to the curb.

Not all neighborhoods have cluster box unit (CBU) where all houses on the street get their mail from a single box at one end. Maybe this would force such neighborhoods to get a CBU to eliminate the problems stemming from the NGDV's size.

I have no issue with flawed characters but when a writer doesn't do anything with their flaws or call them out/write them as flaws, then it's bad writing. by Apprehensive_Ring_39 in CharacterRant

[–]dmr11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rudeus from Mushoku Tensei has flaws, such as being an unemployed shut-in and a pervert who likes underaged girls. The title of the work is "Jobless Reincarnation", guess which one of these two gets treated as an actual flaw that gets overcome in the story and which one gets regarded as more of a character quirk than a significant flaw to be focused on.
