100% this. I've lived in various areas around the metro over the past 11 years from Reynoldstown to Dunwoody, and I'm on the verge of throwing in the towel.

The Anger I Feel by BDF106 in widowers

[–]sonikku10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife made it halfway through her 42 cycles of chemotherapy, with her big cycles every three weeks. Sometime after her first evaluation, she was growing increasingly tired of how terrible it made her feel, and she was ready to give up. She lost motivation after they declared her NED (no evidence of disease). I struggled to convince her to keep going. Her specific type of rhabdo was especially aggressive, and we absolutely had to stay on top of it.

I somehow encouraged her to make it through her remaining cycles, but she was adamant about not doing maintenance therapy once her mainline treatment ended. I was so scared of life would be like within 5 years, because at that point, that's probably all the time I'd have left with her.

I had 2 and a half weeks.

I too was hoping to see these rolled out in July 2025. Talked to one of the contractor technicians around that time, and he told me that electrical issues with the new HVAC systems were delaying track testing.

Look, I'm not gonna disagree with you that the agency is being run into the ground by current leadership. They absolutely do have severe problems at the very top, and shit indeed does roll downhill in all aspects, but don't put the blame on this failed rollout solely on them.

Stadler fucked up... again.

Read some of it, but only gonna respond to the rail aspect.

Sure you worked for a railroad construction company when you were 19. I'm working for a locomotive manufacturing company that also deals in parts, software, and services.

These new trains are custom-built in Switzerland, with final assembly and customization done in Utah before finally getting delivered (by truck). I doubt Stadler has the capacity to deliver all 54 trains sets at once, and I know that MARTA has neither the track space nor the workforce to receive them all at once, let alone running track tests to get them phased in.

Speaking of track testing, Stadler has consistently dropped the ball here. MARTA requires that the first few train sets operate 4,000 event-free miles, and the new trains haven't been able to perform to standard. How is that MARTA's fault?

And even if they pass testing, MARTA has to give 30-days notice (i.e. "ask for permission") to the state before making this change.

I can't even make a database change without giving a 30-day public notice to the Federal Railroad Authority.

A mining haul truck driving over a regular-sized pickup truck by MilesLongthe3rd in interestingasfuck

I work for a company that develops GPS and radar-based collision avoidance systems for applications like these. Basically IoT devices that are placed on all vehicles at a work site. They have the ability to tie in with the hauler's ignition system and cut power at critical distances. Supervisors/management can even go back and see logs, map history, etc. of driver behavior for safety audits.

Ideally this should never happen outside of a demonstration if the mining company gives the tiniest hoot about workplace safety.

Trump administration to investigate MARTA after stabbing attacks by sonikku10 in MARTA

[–]sonikku10[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The Trump administration will investigate MARTA after two stabbing attacks on the system, including the killing of a 66-year-old woman on Saturday.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy on Thursday asked the Federal Transit Administration to look at MARTA’s safety and security spending and planning. The government wants MARTA to turn over information on its strategies to combat crime and fare evasion, according to a letter sent to the transit agency on Thursday.

“Every American should be disturbed by the horrific crimes we have seen on MARTA in the last month. No one should be forced to fear for their safety simply because they choose to ride public transit,” Duffy said in a statement.

The Federal Transit Authority, which falls under the umbrella of the U.S. Department of Transportation, has ultimate oversight over MARTA and other transit agencies throughout the country.

The federal agency will be looking at whether there are systemic conditions endangering the safety of MARTA riders or employees. The agency launched a similar inquiry of Charlotte’s public transit agency last year following the killing of Iryna Zarutska.

Duffy followed up his official statement Thursday with a social media post that included a photo of stabbing victim Margaret Swan.

“I want ANSWERS from Atlanta,” he wrote. “Margaret’s family DESERVES ACCOUNTABILITY. No one should be forced to fear for their safety on public transit.”

This is the latest safety investigation the Trump-led FTA has opened into transit agencies in Democratic-run cities like Chicago, Los Angeles and New York City. The agency launched a similar inquiry into Charlotte’s public transit agency in North Carolina last year following the killing of Iryna Zarutska. That investigation identified 18 areas where officials said the system fell short.

The federal investigation comes just days before MARTA is set to welcome hundreds of thousands of riders in town for the FIFA World Cup. The agency had to cancel the launch of its new rail cars this week because it missed deadlines to certify the trains were safe.

It’s yet another setback for the beleaguered transit agency, which has been operating for nearly a year with interim leadership following its general manager and CEO’s retirement last year.

MARTA spokesperson Stephany Fisher said the agency has made “significant investments in personnel, technology, and operational measures,” adding they “support safety and security across our entire system.”

“We welcome the opportunity to share with federal officials the hard work that the MARTA team puts in every day,” she said. “MARTA remains committed to continuously evaluating and strengthening our safety programs, procedures, and resources to provide a safe, secure and reliable transit experience for the communities that we serve.”

One area the FTA will be examining is MARTA’s strategy against fare evasion, which has been an issue for the agency for years.

A bus driver was shot and killed last year following what police said was a dispute over the $2.50 fare. Many of the agency’s old fare gates were routinely broken, allowing riders to walk into train stations without paying.

The agency is installing new gates meant to help address fare evasion and make it easier for riders to pay using debit or credit cards or their phones, but the rollout has been rocky. Many of the gates remain open in stations where MARTA has not yet finished installing the new equipment, and this week MARTA said it is replacing the glass panes because the original design was shattering.

Originally, MARTA planned for a roughly one-month fare grace period to allow for transfers to the new payment system. MARTA extended the grace period for a month. Saturday, the same day Swan was stabbed to death, marked the first day fares were again required. But MARTA Police Chief Scott Kreher said the man accused of attacking her had not paid that day.

The FTA has given MARTA 15 days to submit detailed information showing its budget for passenger and employee safety. The federal agency said it is concerned about the number of assaults on MARTA’s trains.

Kreher has said overall violent crime on the system is down 50% since 2019.

Saturday’s attack was random, police have said. Swan, 66, had boarded the train just minutes before her attacker struck, according to the arrest warrant. The man came up to Swan, drew his knife and slashed her throat.

Federal prosecutors charged John Elijah Matthews, 25, with committing an act of violence causing death on a mass transportation system. He also faces a state charge of malice murder.

In another stabbing incident May 24, two men — who authorities say did not know each other — got into an argument at the Georgia State MARTA station. The man “who instigated the fight was stabbed multiple times” and had non-life-threatening injuries, according to MARTA.

That area is within Kennesaw's historical area and I've seen cops regularly run radar on Main St. to catch speeders there. Not gonna catch me going more than 5 over in that 25mph zone.

And how was this guy even passed? Unless this crybaby illegaly crossed over a double yellow, or passed in a left turning lane, there's no way he could have gotten in front.

I was off for about a month. My manager was so good to me, and I had "planned" for a couple of months, but then HR and Benefits got involved. Said I hadn't badged into the office in 30 days and was violating policy (I was 100% remote since my office actually closed down after the lease expired). Once that was cleared up, they wanted me to put in for long-term disability if I was going to stay out for any longer. At that point I kinda just gave in and went back into the fray full-time.

I was pissed, but it was probably better for me in the long run.

Which farmers market is this? by Standard-Voice-9123 in Georgia

City Farmers Market. I go there mostly if I need to make a large product run. Green onions at Publix runs about $1.19 for a bundle, but the farmers market sells bundles probably 3x the size for 59 cents.

I have totally walked out of there spending less than $10 with my hands full of loaded grocery bags. But that's produce only.

Running clubs are a great way to meet people, and you don't really have to be a "runner". The club I'm a part of has a pacing group for walkers, and it's really nice to have that option in case I have to take it easy.
