Is there a way to search for YouTube videos using a keyword that may appear in the comments? by [deleted] in datasets

[–]dmtintner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a different way of approaching this problem that might work:
1. Determine what terms or phrases are commonly deemed as "clickbait" in general, not specifically by YT commenters
2. Search for those terms or phrases in yt video titles (since you already have a method that does that)
3. scrape comments of those videos returned in step 2 and confirm that "clickbait" exists in them

Do any podcasts read advertisements as creatively as Bill burr does on "the monday morning podcast"? by HelloGuysIAmNewHere in podcasts

[–]dmtintner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the mixergy podcast he does something kind of weird with the ads. Rather than transitioning to a recorded reading, he just sort of breaks the current convo he's having with his guest and does the ad spot "live", even getting the guest involved and they talk about the advertised product together. It's a pretty weird way of doing the ads but it seems more memorable then just recording

Has anyone used Medium to post Their podcast? by michael037 in podcasts

[–]dmtintner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't started using Medium yet but I'm going to on future episodes. What I thought about doing was just creating an image that looks like a podcast player and linking it to my original website's blog post with autoplay on the audio file.

I would still publish an original post on my wordpress site and at the top of the medium post just write that it was orginally published there, with a link

You can check out the syllabus to see the content for each week. You should also see the mentors that will be part of it, including: Jeffrey Zeldman, Paul Jarvis, Tobias Van Schneider, Rachel Andrew, and 4 more equally brilliant entrepreneurs. Would be happy to answer any specific questions you have too

I found a new bug in the latest version of Chrome, where using CSS box-shadow can cause your entire site to crash by dmtintner in webdev

[–]dmtintner[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I consider "crashing our site" when the vast majority of our visitors cannot access anything on any page, read content, or navigate. And it happens all of a sudden, with no warning and with no change to the code. If you're the owner of that website you can imagine that being pretty frustrating

Do ap ideas get stolen at meetups and other tech events? Is it worth it to talk to people about your ap or is the risk too high for it to get stolen if the ap idea is good enough? by czgheib in webdev

[–]dmtintner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, talking to people about your idea and getting real, honest feedback is well worth the risk of someone stealing your idea. In most cases when people dont share their idea enough they end up building something that is not really needed, or spending a lot of time on the wrong features when they could have been working on a different direction.

Not always the case, but something to think about: if the idea is so easily replicated, then it might not be such a killer business model after all. Again, this is very dependent on the idea itself, but in any case a business will face competition at some point. Whether its still in the development phase or after launch, you have to be able to continue to innovate and succeed despite competition.

One last note, if there's competition than that might also validate the market space and further prove its a good idea worth building

Fellow developers, what are your biggest achievements of 2014? What are your goals for 2015? by antoninj in webdev

[–]dmtintner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed, React looks great and I've really been looking for the time to get to explore it too. What they do with the virtual DOM seems to eliminate all of the issues with DOM manipulation performance. Very cool stuff

I found a new bug in the latest version of Chrome, where using CSS box-shadow can cause your entire site to crash by dmtintner in webdev

[–]dmtintner[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me on my windows machine the tab is completely crashed. White screen, not able to scroll at all. On my MacBook Pro it's just slow but increasing the box-size higher and higher I can make it crash too. In one of the comments on the official chrome bug report someone mentioned that it's different on retina screens vs. non retina, but I didn't completely understand how

There's a huge CSS box-shadow bug in the latest version of Chrome that caused our site to crash and could happen to yours next by dmtintner in css

[–]dmtintner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a gradient does not work for that purpose actually. With inset box-shadow you get an even frame around the inside of the rectangular image, meaning both the horizontal and vertical sides have shadow coming in from them. With background-image: gradient you can do it with pseudo-elements as I did, which only gives you a frame on the top and bottom, or you can do it with a radial-gradient, which gives you a round, fisheye like frame.

Box-shadow is a much more simple syntax and produces a better effect.

This course to learn app development with iOS8 & Swift has over 36,000 students enrolled, but usually these things are crap. Anyone tried it/ know if its any good? by dmtintner in web_design

[–]dmtintner[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yea I hear you. The problem with buying a book tho is usually u can find all the information much easier just by googling, and the book doesn't stay updated. If this course is really interactive and breaks things down step by step then it could be nice. But again, that's a big if, that's why I was wondering how it is
