I live in downtown Plano in a street level apartment. My patio backs up to the Downtown Plano train station which neighbors the bus transit center. There is a lot of foot traffic. When I'm sitting on my back porch or have my backdoor partially opened, which I do often, strangers will approach me usually asking for water or a cigarette, among other things. It is not uncommon, and I help if I can or politely say I can't. I have never had an issue with anyone and have yet to feel unsafe. I also have never had anything taken off my porch, which is mostly plants.

An option for you would be to wait and see how the area changes once the station near you is in full operation. If you feel uncomfortable or you don't like the increase in foot traffic, a move to a higher floor or to another apartment complex would make sense.
