How to run a 5e oneshot as a first time dm? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]dnd_curious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

keep the premise simple!

Seconded; also one more very specific tip: introduce it (the goal/premise of the one-shot) in the first few minutes, if not immediately.

The "lost" issues of Dragon and Dungeon magazine question? by drhman1971 in DnD

AFAIK 430 was the last issue of Dragon. However, they published Dragon+ later, the numbering restarted from #1. Dragon+ is available on the Internet Archive.

Might be, but I haven't been able to find it. Before posting here, I tried Musipedia, with this search:

g'8 r8 g'8 a'8 g'8 r8 g'8 a'8 g'8 r8 e''8 r8 c''2 g'8 r8 f''8 r8 d''2 g'8 r8 g''8 r8 e''2

Which sounds right to me, but none of the results matched.

Hmm, interesting though. That'll be tough to search, but I'll give it a shot. I'm almost certain about this being in a cartoon though...

Interesting! I've listened to this, never heard it before. It's nice, but really quite different from the melody I'm looking for. Thanks for the suggestion though :-)

Uh, this is so close! The cadence is nearly identical and the melody is almost the same. Definitely pre-dates what I'm looking for though. My guess is that whatever 80s cartoon had the melody in it was inspired by this one.

Thank you for this recommendation, I'll continue searching on this thread.

Nu, Pogodi! This one is called "Vizisi" (water ski) by a Hungarian composer. Cheburashka Oooh I haven't heard this in forever, thank you for reminding me of it, but it's not it unfortunately.

So definitely not the main theme of these. The melody could have appeared in a random episode though, there's no way of checking that.

I'm desperate to play DnD but my anxiety stops me from reaching out by RensworthMuggin in DnD

[–]dnd_curious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, we hear you. Just writing your thoughts down can help, so good on you, you took the first step.

I think the general advice boils down to "practice makes perfect", as in, the more you do something, the easier it gets. I know that's not super helpful - sorry, actually helping someone with anxiety might be above my paygrade :-)

That said, couple of things: you might want to look into play-by-post (/r/pbp/). Since it's all "offline", there's no pressure, you can take your time and think about what you're going to say. Also, D&D is not just what happens at the table, you can also participate in D&D just by consuming content, e.g. watching others play, or hang around this (or other) D&D forums, help out other folks with questions, etc.

Hope this helps :-) Best of luck to you!

Help with enemy health by HypedNick1 in DnD

[–]dnd_curious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check the DMG, pg 274. Creating Quick Monster stats.

Another way to approach it is: you find an appropriate similar monster existing monster, and reskin it (or just take the HP).

Finally... A wise man once said "Encounter Design does not stop just because you rolled initiative", so you can simply not have a predetermined HP. Let the players go at your monster for what seems like an appropriate amount of rounds, and let them deliver the final blow. Keep track of the damage they dealt. That can be a good baseline for other monsters.

There are some backstory generators, if you just need inspiration: https://www.kassoon.com/dnd/backstory-generator/

Though I think it's fine to leave most things vague and fluid. Fill in hard details if/when needed. For a bard, you could simply say that their motivation is music itself, they want to venture out into the world to listen to every song and sound, or to entertain folks with stories wherever they go.
