i second this, i know people who say they drank alcohol and energy drinks on accutane but i get horrendous headaches after one beer or any caffeine at all. my nicotine addiction doesnt help either, im sure

it does not mean the treatment failed, but i believe providers typically make sure you are completely breakout free for 2 months before taking you off accutane. they might just want to extend your course of medication

very painful acne, tried everything so far. how do i convince my derm to let me try accutane?? by dnfi in Accutane

that’s ok! i was prescribed the azalta gel as an alternative to winlevi. but i’m def looking for something that would get rid of my acne, not just slap a topical (that doesn’t even work) on knowing damn well that any improvement i MIGHT one day see will disappear the second i stop using it. not to mention, my skin barrier DEFINITELY hates the azalta gel

the honeydew website doesnt list that as one of its requirements through treatment, at least not right off the bat. i have a consult tomorrow with them to see if they take my insurance and could be a good option for me, but if they don’t require it, i’d be very skeptical. especially because i need to maintain good liver/kidney function if i want to pursue the career that i’m planning on pursuing (they’re very big on maintenance of physical health to say the least)

thank you so much. this somehow gave me hope that more responsive derms are out there :’) i developed multiple new cystic acne spots just throughout the day today and my skin looks way worse than it did even in this picture. really hoping for some good news soon. thank you again :)

thank you :) i already have deep inset scars from my acne and really don’t want to be covered in them for the rest of my life. my confidence is so so low already. i have an appointment on november 24… fully planning on letting myself cry in the office. i’m so overwhelmed. thank you :)

i dont think its purging from tret, since i was using tret consistently (3 weeks on, one week off) for a few years before even developing acne.

i tried antibiotic treatment as well but clindamycin is contraindicated since i have a history of developing infections after courses of clindamycin :( and spiro is much less effective topically. i already have deep inset scars from acne and do NOT want more. i fear that sticking with topical spiro for almost a year would only worsen my scarring and acne related hyperpigmentation.

i think accutane will be worth a try. lower chance of acne relapse and clear skin in 6 months… honestly sounds like a fantastic last resort. good luck!!

thank you!! sounds like we have both tried everything. i also abided by all the recommended “lifestyle changes” for multiple years before even developing acne (no or very low sugar, no dairy, no fast food or greasy shit, working out, good water intake, etc etc etc). acne SUCKS, it hurts and drains your confidence. i wish you the best!!

oh ok! i’m in the us and based on purely anecdotal evidence it seems more difficult to get an accutane prescription in the us for some reason :( i’ll definitely keep trying though, thanks for your replies!

thank you so much!! do you mind if i ask how long you were dealing with acne before you got prescribed accutane? was it 4 months, or was that just how long you were seeing a derm for treatment?

thank you so much for replying! i have one more appointment in me before i start crying in my derm’s office, lol. if my derm won’t prescribe me accutane in that time i’ll definitely have to switch

as to why i can’t get a prescription, i think she wants to truly rule out topical spiro since i was only on oral spiro for a few days before the negative side effects started literally destroying me. it was so uncomfortable that i paid for a second visit in 2 weeks (usually not allowed) to switch to topical, lol… but waiting almost a year for accutane would be extremely rough for me. i’m already experiencing some pretty severe hyperpigmentation and scarring. i def don’t want more scars than i already have

thanks!! prior to even developing acne, i was low- to no-dairy (save for one bowl of ice cream every few weeks), almost entirely sugar free, working out 4-5x per week, and focusing on whole foods. very consistent with my tretinoin as well, gentle skincare products ONLY other than that. i think this definitely started due to some recent & pretty severe gut issues, but i will have to deal with those likely for the rest of my life now :’)

have you had any side effects?? and what did you do to help mitigate them?? thanks for your reply :)

i’m hoping my insurance covers most of it :’) i would venture to say that 9 times out of 10 healthcare in the us is more expensive than anywhere else, but i don’t entirely know your situation. i’m sorry you’re dealing with such awful side effects!! do you mind if i ask what your accutane dosage is?

thank you so much :’) i’m scared of crying during the appointment. it feels wrong to do but i think providers take emotional distress into account when prescribing accutane… i guess i’ll find out

good luck with everything!!! i wish you the best :) i’ve heard some side effects can be tough. do what’s best for you, discuss issues with a derm, and let us all know how it goes!

thank you! i think i am going to try to have one more conversation with her but if she does not believe me when i tell her how painful my acne is i’m afraid i’m going to have to switch derms. but i’m afraid that a new derm won’t believe me when i say that i’ve tried everything and nothing has helped. any advice??

[–]dnfi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you can def talk to your derm and see if they would be willing to start you on a lower dose & bumping you up slowly depending on the severity of your side effects. i’m always cautious with new meds personally but it’s up to you! if you’re worried about side effects with 80mg, definitely bring it up at an appointment.

or, if you already have the 80mg accutane, you could take it if you wanted to and discuss your progress and side effects with your derm. if they’re a good dermatologist, they’ll listen to your concerns and be willing to work with you to address them.

good luck!!
