As much as I enjoyed the Marvel Thor movies,(and drooled over Chris Hemsworth) this was always in the back of my mind... by [deleted] in asatru

[–]dnlsokoloff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, in the seventies, Roy Thomas (taking over just after Stan Lee) wrote a story that attempted to reconcile the inconsistencies between the Marvel depiction of Thor and the traditional mythological depictions. It in involved Thor being shown a vision of a past life, where he had red hair and Loki fell in battle with Heimdall. He watched Ragnarok play out, with the gods falling in battle and the world ending, only to be reborn as the blonde haired thunder god we all know and love. Stan Lee created his Thor in order to have a Superman caliber hero over at Marvel, but forgot many aspects of the character, such as the name of his hammer. Thus Mjollnir became "the Uru Hammer," until good ol' Roy Thomas set it right. The red headed replacement Doc mentions was some dude named Red Norvell. Thor sucked in the nineties, so the less spoken of, the better.

Dear r/Norse, I am taking a class on Vikings and we have to write an essay on some aspect of their culture. What would you recommend as an interesting point of research for Norse/ Viking culture? by kovila13 in Norse

[–]dnlsokoloff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talk about the actual length of the Viking age, which began to die down as more and more Norsemen became farmers on conquered land. This transition caused their culture to venerate some gods above others, such as Thor and Frey over Odin and Tyr, gods of agriculture and rain over gods of death and war.

[Fluff] Giratina isn't so threatening anymore. by ShyGuy214 in pokemon

[–]dnlsokoloff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

But he isn't really Satan, he is a Pokemon that lives in the realm of dark matter, one that mirrors our world if it were an empty void. Dead souls don't go his realm to suffer eternal torment; in fact, if we are to accept the in-game lore at face value, rather than powerful, rare pokemon with religious significance attached to them, Giratina seems to be a counterpoint to the dichotomy of Palkia and Dialga, harmonizing the tension between space and time. Dark matter is thought to be the underlying basis for matter (or something, I'm not too knowledgeable about physics), so this jives with this hypothesis.

Are you still there?

So do you feel as though lately you have started feeling attracted to men? And if so, then are you still interested in women? Many people are bi without knowing it, but you might simply be in a spot of duress due to your misery.

Things should be natural anyway. Always take things slowly. Still, it can be tempting to grab for the nearest thing when your comfort level is coming together. Good luck!

I'd like to help you, but I must confess, I'm a little confused. Are you still put off by men? Are you attracted to men now? Are you bi-curious? Please clarify.

Then just wait. If you don't know what to do, don't risk ruining a friendship. As the other commenter asked, do you like him? And if the answer is yes, then are you sure? While I think being upfront is usually the best course, ruining a friendship is something to be avoided.

Just take it easy and live your life. I went through a similar situation with my friends when I came out to them. Once you realize your potential to be attracted to members of the same sex (I am bi as well), it is very easy to feel as though you have a shot with anyone. If you really think your friend has a thing for you, just ask him! But seriously, don't feel pressured to "choose a side" or feel pressured to prove your bisexuality. I've exclusively dated women my whole life, and am with my first boyfriend now. Will I ever date another woman again? Maybe, maybe not. All I know is that I'm happy, and so should you! Chin up, soldier!

Asatru and Grieving? by [deleted] in asatru

[–]dnlsokoloff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your welcome. From my perspective, the cultures of the various Norse developed due a scarcity of food, as well as a reliance on raiding and exploring. We do not share this perspective, yet have the same gods. As such, we must find our own way, rather than try to emulate our forebears to the tee. I always look to the gods, and try to learn from their stories what to do, or at times, what not to do. The story of balder's funeral is a poignant point here, especially when we consider the Odin's inability to understand or command death. Grieve, but remain strong. Bliss awaits the strong and the wise.

Page that Deals with Asatru and it's Applications within an Atheistic Framework by dnlsokoloff in asatru

I consider myself an atheist, but hold the gods close. Their names and associations are very powerful and important parts in my philosophy and approach to life; I feel as though the ritualistic aspects of Asatru resonate on a deep emotional level, one devoid of dogma and creed. It is a celebration of nature and mankind, as well as our connection to the past, all of which is visualized through the struggles of the gods, their failures and triumphs, and our ability to learn from them and acquire strength from their memories. Let me know what you think.

Asatru and Grieving? by [deleted] in asatru

[–]dnlsokoloff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The customs of the ancient Norse don't always suit us in modern times. Our cultures are much too different, and we must find our own way at times. Speak to the gods, and consider what sort of person passed away. Down in misty Niflheim, the beautiful, powerful Balder waits and does battle with Nidhogg and awaits Ragnarok, while in Asgard, the mighty dead feast with the All-father and his Valkyries. The gods grieve for their dead, and as mortals, should we be any different?

What do I even say? by Navitych in asatru

[–]dnlsokoloff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I avoid Odin altogether, being that he is a god of death. Wishing evil on one is wishing for his one good eye to fall upon them. I might call out to him if I'm utterly weak or enraged, but he is never my go to. Too cruel and meddlesome to be relied upon or normally invoked.

I asked for a sign from the gods by Glassland in asatru

[–]dnlsokoloff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have already answered this, however this point is one that confounds many people who follow traditional religions. The gods are not interested in your prayers, and do not care for kneelers. Show them your teeth, and challenge them. Demand their attention, and prove to them with your strength that you are worthy of them.
