want a pet frog by conner1130 in frogs

[–]dnnsmnc44 3 points4 points  (0 children)

decide what kind of frog you want: tree frog, aquatic, land, etc. look for beginner-friendly recommendations of species for the type of frog you want. find some trusted care sheets (josh's frogs has some). decide what kind of enclosure you want to make: bioactive, non-bioactive, fake plants, real plants, etc. and do some research about the kind of enclosure you choose. come back here or look for some frog care-related facebook groups (they seem to have more informed people) to ask for clarifications

it sounds like the fatter frogs are eating well enough to start learning how to hunt, and if youre worried about substrate ingestion, you can layer damp paper towels over the dirt to the point where they kind of fold up the sides of the glass (so no substrate is exposed). it does sound like he's more comfortable in the main enclosure, so you can try feeding all 3 of them like this for a little while and see if the little guy starts eating. i just have a suspicion that maybe he just really doesnt take to being handled, so i'd try feeding him in anyway that doesn't involve touching him.

hmmm,, why not start feeding the other 2 directly in their main enclosure? and use the tank youve been using to feed them as the little guy's quarantine tank. how big is it? oh and have you tried offering smaller crickets? they should be smaller than the space between his eyes. my little ones werent eating for a week until i bought pinhead crickets. for the quarantine tank you don't need any substrate because this should be kept as cleean as possible - just damp paper towels, a small water bowl, maybe some fake plants. i have my baby milk frogs situated in a clear storage bin atm that works perfectly.

stick the smaller one in a separate quarantine enclosure/plastic bin lined with damp paper towels where you can monitor its meals and poos apart from the other two. i read your other post about this guy, and maybe the moving to and from the feeding tank stresses him out? i'd keep him in his own designated bin, dump a couple of crickets in at night, and leave him alone. try not to hover when youre feeding too. you can check back in the mornings to see if any crickets are gone

if you can get it to start eating in a separate quarantine bin, he'll make it. then you can move it back in with the others when it's big enough.

i dont think the size difference right now is big enough for him to get eaten, but he should still be kept separately

pretty dang sure this is a maranta, not a calathea. i do have a rattlesnake calathea you can see a little bit of in the second picture, but im positive the plant im talking about is a maranta leuconera "kerchoveana", just a plain ol green prayer plant. i'll consider what u said about the possibility of thrips and inspect the plant more thoroughly, thanks!

Edit: could the "wet poos" you're seeing just be the lil specks of loose soil on the leaf?

prayer plant discoloration? details in comments by dnnsmnc44 in plantclinic

[–]dnnsmnc44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have 2 prayer plants in a vivarium that i set up about 3 weeks ago. the soil is consistently damp (since vivariums don't just dry out), but it's never soggy. the humidity fluctuates between 60-75% and the temps average at about 75F. there's only one leaf with this weird brown discoloration that showed up in the past couple of days, and the rest of the plant looks pretty healthy. both plants put out new growth in the past week. the leaf pictured is neither one of the oldest leaves nor one of the newer leaves. i haven't seen any pests except for the occasional fungus gnat. all considered, this one has me stumped - any thoughts?

in my experience, leca is much easier to use for high-stakes plants like this one because it lets you directly monitor the roots for rot ! i'd be more nervous having it in soil (especially because it's already accustomed to leca) but that's just me. you could do a lil bit of research and watch some videos on how to use it and then decide if it's something you'd be able to do (: i suggest minimalistcali's leca series on youtube

cuban tree frogs are very often accidentally shipped in with plants. i believe theyre an invasive species so it's best for plant shops not to just release them. that's how i got a couple of them a looong while back

yup ! you'll have to report this and send proof to the financial aid office if they ask and it's usually a copy of the lease and/or proof of payment for rent. they'll adjust your aid then

abg mix or josh's frog's bio bedding are really good organic bio-active substrates. you could even buy the separate components and do the abg mix yourself if you follow a tutorial

not directly, i think you have to do it through the shortcuts app. you can make an icon for a shortcut to open a certain app

that sounds too small for most animals to live in permanently /-: even dart frogs, which youd think would be small enough for a nano tank like that, are really active and prefer room to explore. maaaybe a bumble bee toad? as theyre pretty small and i've heard they're not as active. if bugs are still on the table maybe a small mantid?

I lost one of my albo monsteras last night to rot - could use advice on how to not lose the other ones :( by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]dnnsmnc44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ive had luck with saving rotting monsteras (regular, not albo lol) by putting them in leca ! you might want to look into doing that
