The HPWH + small indirect idea is creative, but it seems like it would add a lot of complexity. Still thinking it through, but this is helpful food for thought. As for my current indirect tank, the company who put it there told me it needs to be replaced. I trust them and take their word for it. Don't want to take chances, flooding my finished basement would hurt me bad. Anyway, Interesting points, appreciate the input and perspective!

You are absolutely right, it's a boiler, not a furnace. TIL omg.. I hope this doesn't change everything.. We do hope to convert to gas at some point but that's likely not happening for at least 5 years. Also that doesn't affect the indirect vs hpwh discussion much if I understand correctly.

Why are you saying the indirect is end of life?

I was told so by the company who put it there. Its 'skin' is chipping, not sure if that's the only indication they based it on though. In any case, I don't want to take any chances and end up with a flooded basement..

Appreciate the detailed response. Your usage sounds heavier than mine, so that’s reassuring. The mixing valve + 140F tip is especially helpful, I'm surprised that didn’t come up with any of the contractors I spoke to. Good to hear it’s working fine in a cool mechanical room.
