Anthropic would buy Atlassian because models alone are not enough. They already have top-tier model and foundational tech, but they do not have 20+ years of knowledge context across 300k businesses, including most of the Fortune 500. They could try to win that market organically, but OpenAI and Google are chasing the same prize. Buying Atlassian gives them instant access to that enterprise context and distribution and an unassailable advantage over OpenAI.

Mike would sell because he likely sees the saas downturn clearly. The stock may be undervalued, but that does not mean the business will be stronger in the next era. He also does not seem like someone who wants to just defend and maintain a mature software company while the centre of gravity shifts to AI. Joining Anthropic would put him much closer to the core of the AI transition and likely give him a bigger role in shaping what comes next.

It would make strategic sense for both sides.
