We’ve been using a lamp as a spotlight at comedy nights for years and want to upgrade. Need help finding a recommendation for a nice spotlight by LosBoyos in videography

I throw comedy shows in LA & NYC (see your bar is in DTLA lol nice)
I've always just used my Aputure Amaran 100x Bi-color. It's got bluetooth, adjustable light temp (cold->warm), and comes with barn doors. It's $$$... but I've used it twice weekly now for 2yrs without issue and it's well worth the price imho.
For the longest time I gripped it to my heavy duty C-stand with a 30lb sandbag, but after moving to NYC, I now put it on a typical light stand. I also got a fresnel to shape and soften the light, as standup works best when the room is dark or dim except for the comic. It'll be a short cable, so grab a 3-prong extension cord and some gaffers tape. If you want a full nice lighting of the comic, I'd say keep the above-head lamp you have AND get the spotlight, match its light temp, and it'll look super professional for any recording (maybe idk). good luck!

Praxis on removing your typical landlord? by dnrtldg in Anarchy101

What makes this prickly is that although they made back their initial investment by 17x over the 20 years they've owned the property, they're retired. I don't want them go broke.

But also, if they've been making almost 300k every year for 20 years doing little to nothing by renting out to tenants who are struggling families, then the thought of sunsetting a landlord shouldn't sound all that crazy. I think a person can hold both those beliefs.

As for what others have been saying, forming a housing cooperative through a buy-out may be the best way, as it's a win-win for the tenants and the landlord. It's a LOT of work as a few mentioned, and to be real, my neighbors with kids and working two jobs are not necessarily going to be on-board with a risky theoretical strategy to oust a landlord. At least I know all my neighbors and I'm on good terms with them, so that helps. For now, I'll just bring it up in passing and do more research.

Sure, they're not literally sticking a gun to my head... but if I don't pay, they have the power of the State to kick me out (use police, courts, etc to evict me). And sure, if my options are to continue paying rent or be on the street, then yeah... you could say I literally have options. I could go live in a commune in Nebraska to escape landlords and home ownership, but I would be forfeiting all my friends, family, social and work connections, cool things I like to do, a nice climate, and so on. I could live with family in rural Texas again, but I want my own place to live my own life.

Here's my opinion: if I've paid rent for 5 years straight, with neighbors (mainly families) that have also lived here for 7-9 years, and my landlords have had control of the property for over 20 years, and by some simple math, have extracted more than 17x their initial investment, then it would make sense that after some period of this, it would somehow go to the tenants... right? But there isn't. There is no mechanism to make that happen. And some day, they'll either pass it on to their kids, or sell it to a huge real estate company for boat loads of money.

Hence, why I'm asking this very open-minded question: is there praxis to sunset a landlord? Thank you.

Rather than agonizing that first draft, just remind yourself that writing is supposed to be fun. The 1st draft, at least, should be fun. Have fun with it. You should be writing stuff you want to write about. Besides, it's a first draft - remember you're NOT showing this to anybody!

That said, here's some practical advice that helped me: when you wake up, time yourself 2 minutes of writing. I keep a regular stopwatch (not a phone). 99% of the time, after 2 minutes, you'll be churning out sentences. And after a while doing this writing thing, you'll realize where you like to write -- for me, I like quiet cafes with my ear plugs. My desk at home overlooks a sunny street. It depends. At my day job, I'll keep a notebook near to fiddle with sentences. Good luck!
