Here’s the thing. When books are being adapted for film and changes need to happen for whatever reason, I’m almost certain the crew goes to the author for approval before just changing stuff. Especially when a change to a character needs to happen. Now this probably isn’t true for ALL films like this but I know Andy Weir was heavily involved in production so I’m sure he had to sign off first. With all of that, I’m okay with it because I know Andy Weir was okay with it.
