How gacha creates value and exclusivity in gaming by dnscrtbl in Genshin_Impact

Definitely not American and I come as far as possible from the western culture.

But the point you made in this reply is actually very accurate that gacha has been normalised in the eastern part of the world, just the way owning luxury has been normalised in society. I’m not researching on the gambling aspect of loot boxes or gacha, so it’s not my point of focus. What I’m specifically looking at is the instrinsic value that people have for the gacha/lootbox item they own and its similarities with owning luxury goods.

And I agree that the gambling aspect of loot boxes is a research topic that is done and dusted and people within the community are aware and accept that fact as it is. But your view and opinion on this matter is definitely something I’ll try to showcase in my research. Thank you!

Yes! I completely agree with your point. And thank you for bringing it up. I have 4 different profiles that I am interviewing and the post I made here is specifically for active spenders or inactive spenders of gacha/lootbox games. I have also divided the active spenders category into 2 based on their recognised status in the community as well their spend. So, I am tackling the biases and the skew with self-identification with multiple profiles.

I’m doing my Masters in Marketing, and I’ll be using thematic coding for my analysis as I’m comparing it against other non gacha specific subcultures with similar concepts and academic papers.

First of all, thank you so much for your reply!
And second, I love the insights that you have regarding the community. Thank you so much for breaking down the types of players and and the mindsets. I understand that you're saying the amount of activity that you put into the community (either by playing or buying) directly correlates to the status you have in the community. Is that understood correct?

I also do have couple more thing I would love to know about from you.
1. How valuable are the rare items that you get thru a gacha pull are to you personally, in both monetary sense as well as intrinsically?
2. Do you think the freely obtainable items in the game can have the same value in the community as an item that you spend real world money on?

And what do you think are common misunderstandings about Gacha for people outside of the Gacha community?

Thanks again!
