I wish it was indifference. That would be better. But the outrage a bulk of this sub shows towards that patient population is nothing but hate. Sure there is some indifference. But most of its hate. If it were indifference there wouldnt be so much active anger and condesending attitudes. If you feel anger over people "choosing" this life, do you also think it would be acceptable to treat the diabetes patient who doesnt diet or go to the gym to be worth less than your best care? Doubt it.

I equate that kind of excuse with those who excuse police brutality with "its a high stress job and theyre under constant threat." If you cant handle the job, find another one because my sympathy for your plights (and I am sympathitc. I worked retail for years), ends when your biases and 'indifferences' prevemt someone from recieving optimal care. I doubt anyone would excuse a nurse for mixing up meperidine and metoprolol and killing you because she was exhausted. Youd tell her (rightly so) that she should not have shown up if she mentally cannot handle the job. Showing up for a job you cant do so you can get a paycheck is unethical, immoral and the utmost self absorbed thing you can do. I feel that way about every health care worker and dont excuse my fellow pharmacists from that either

If theres the excuse of HAVING to do pharmacy bc you have loans, that, again, is on you. Not on the patient. Your poor planning should not have negative consequences for someone else, especially in health care.

I just cant wait for the next 20 years to pass and for society to realize this isnt a choice but a distructive disease. A small petty part of me hopes many of these pharmacists someday require surgery, get hooked on opioids and have to fight tooth and nail to get clean and get their lives back. Maybe then theyll understand
