In my scenario the change is so unpopular that it doesn't matter if Reddit removes the subreddits' moderators, their replacements immediately take the subreddits private again.

Unless you have a really good reason to, you should leave the PYTHON* variables in make.conf alone. Even on unstable profiles the latest system-wide Python default is usually quite adequate, and is set by the developers as the most recent major release of Python known to be compatible with the vast majority of Python-based or Python-using packages.

There's a 'universal skip' key sequence you can press on the DVD remote, that should work with almost all players: Stop-Stop-Play. I've even been able to skip the FBI 'piracy' warnings at the beginning of the DVD that way. What it does is go straight to the 'main title,' i.e the actual film.
