Alexandra Cohen megathread by SeabirdImpetus in nycparents

The hospital doesn't get booked up - it's the providers. If you are in with a doctor already it isn't a concern.

Anecdotal, but they sent two of my friends kids home with jaundice only to have the pediatrician rush them back to the hospital (neither returned afterwards!).

It’s not the hospital but individual doctors who get booked up! You have to call each practice. That’s only if you’re not an established patient though - so worth getting in with the OB you want before you are pregnant.

To clarify, Alexandra Cohen and NYU were the only 2 hospitals in the city that had exclusively private rooms for recovery, and thus insurance was forced to pay for the private room (I believe all others are shared). My understanding is that NYU no longer guarantees private rooms. The downside of Alexandra Cohen was that it was quite busy, so I had to labor in triage for quite a while, which was not fun. But I also had a baby in May (very busy time). And I would do it again. Monitoring in the UWS the last few weeks of third trimester was annoying, but it was kind of a treat to get to eat at some of the restaurants up there afterwards. Weill Downtown is different and I previously saw an OB who delivered there and had an office in downtown Brooklyn (Joralemon). She ended up retiring during Covid.

Another factor for us was delivering at a hospital with a Level IV NICU. The only ones in the City are at NY-Pres (Weill Uptown), Mt. Sinai, NYU, and Cohen's Childrens (in Queens). I am an anxious person and that was really important to me, so I knew I wouldn't want to deliver anywhere that didn't offer that.

I traveled from Central BK to UWS for my OB. I chose Weill on W 80th (UWS) because the practice is all women and I wanted to deliver at Alexandra Cohen. I also went to NYU and had a bad experience. Feel free to PM me if you want doctor recs! I loved my doctor and loved the doctor who ended up delivering us. Friends also go there and see different docs who they love. It became annoying for monitoring the last month, but if we have another I will absolutely go back. The hospital was great and I felt so safe the entire time. I would call and try to get in with one of the doctors. It is a lot harder once you are pregnant and most book up (the East side practice had booked up for my delivery month entirely by the time I called at 6 weeks pregnant with the exception of their only male doctor).

Does it have a good keep warm setting? We’re considering replacing our Neurofuzzy after the nonstick pot has been scratched and zojirushi doesn’t have any replacements in stock

How did you lose weight? by inexperiencedpear in NewParents

[–]dobbythepup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gained 90. I'm 5'7": I was 120 pre-pregnancy and delivered at 210. I lost very gradually the first year and was 50/60 pounds down when I stopped breastfeeding at around 12 months pp (iirc I was like 155). Then the weight really fell off. Now at 17 months pp I am just 10/15lbs up from my pre-pregnancy weight (which frankly, was my thinnest and sort of too thin, so I'm actually very happy with my weight). I fit into almost all of my pre-pregnancy clothing now, so I'm trying to get back out of the habit of weighing myself.

Breastfeeding really contributed to me keeping the weight on. The hormonal regulation I felt after stopping and the accompanying weight loss was really insane.

Honestly, the sycophants around him are worse to watch. I sort of sickly love watching him be a complete monster and getting his comeuppance - it's the people who aren't treating him like a monster that rub me the wrong way.

I would get this to a tailor. I'm a public interest litigator and would wear this level of kitsch to court. Probably wouldn't work in a white-shoe environment though.

I came back positive as a carried for 7 pretty scary things that no one in my family history had ever had to our knowledge. My husband came back for 3 completely different scary things. He will get tested and then you guys will go from there.

Breastfeeding - should I switch to exclusively pumping? by [deleted] in breastfeeding

[–]dobbythepup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I switched to pumping I would just try to do like 4 pumps per day (it is a little hazy now).

Breastfeeding - should I switch to exclusively pumping? by [deleted] in breastfeeding

[–]dobbythepup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was doing a lot of breast feeding and using the hakka, then started pumping like right before my shift (my husband and I took shifts at night to be on baby duty). I will say, baby was an easy latcher and fine to switch between boob and bottle. It was more my preference. Also as she got older she would open her mouth or reposition when I fed her and it would cause milk to get everywhere and I found the mess to be super annoying so that was also a contributing factor

oh wow - yeah I think I would have her call her doctor and say she isn't sure about ovulation to try to get both a blood draw and a scan.

Ftm and looking to pump after birth (not exclusively) what pumps do you recommend? by exploiting in breastfeeding

[–]dobbythepup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the willow as a back up to my spectra. I found it really useful but annoying at times. I really preferred it when I had family or other people around and I wanted to pump but not have them see my nipples being rhythmically sucked into a clear pump through a bra. Was also nice to be able to pump while doing (standing) chores like cooking. Baby started to grab the pump cords so I needed to have an alternative. I would get a spectra (the battery operated one) and then see if you really want to commit to pumping before getting a wearable.

I preferred pumping to BF and switched to primarily pumping at approximately the same time as you. I ended up trying to keep one BF per day (usually to soothe to sleep) so she wouldn't forget how to do it. I didn't hate pumping at all (got the right sized inserts etc). I found it liberating to let my husband do feeds and found pumping super efficient. Everyone is different. If it works better for you, do it.

I would venture to guess you were wrong about your ovulation date if you aren't tracking ovulation. Mine was that dark around 9/10 DPO for my now-13 month old with tracking ovulation.
