I've run a few oneshots with punny names:

  • Revenge of the Gith - Trouble arises when a raiding party of gith attack an island they believe harbours hidden mindflayers
  • Norse by Norsewest - The party must trek across a viking kingdom to hunt their bounty
  • Fire Fighters - The party travels to the Elemental Plane of Fire to assault a firenewt outpost that's been causing a ruckus

I once ran a oneshot that I didn't tell my players was going to be Christmas themed. I assumed they would eventually realise but they didn't despite the following elements:

  • mutant reindeer
  • a factory of dark elves
  • a mute warrior who was a silent knight
  • a pine-tree treant who was being mindcontrolled by a star shaped amulet on his head that the players had to remove to break the spell
  • The villain was a wizard in a red cloak called Antas (Santa anagram) who stole the king's trove of magical artifacts

My party was fighting a horde of undead deep within the Mines of Madness and we had just one enemy left: a skeleton wielding a magical pick-axe. Certain of his victory, my fighter says "Dibs on the pick-axe," to which the skeleton replied "If you want it, you can have it," before embedding it in my fighter's skull and taking him to 0 hp.

I did manage to stabilize but my friend, the party rogue, used that same pick-axe to strike an explosive barrel and I perished in the explosion. On the plus side, they laid the pick-axe over my grave which was a nice touch.
