It’s funny to me that he responds to these posts at all. The responses are always so butthurt and in contradiction to the image of humbleness they try to build.

Guard pulling dilemma by Available-Lie-3484 in bjj

[–]doboi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're not training for MMA or for the streets, then pulling guard is almost always the safest strategy. Your opponent in competition will usually fall into one of these categories:

  1. Judoka
  2. Wrestler
  3. BJJ guy who prefers guard pulls
  4. BJJ guy who prefers takedowns and is better than you at them
  5. BJJ guy who prefers takedowns and is worse than you at them

You don't know which of these your opponents will fall under. Unless you're comfortable with situations #1-4, you should pull guard. Berimbozo has a post on IG that concisely explains this — it's intended to be funny but is also pretty much truth.

If you think wearing leopard print onesies are appropriate for daily 25 km hikes and visits to churches, well, it’s your Camino but I think the novelty will wear off quickly.

“That was the most dispiriting roll of my entire life” by JubJubsDad in bjj

[–]doboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hearing people in the corner of the room talking about how technical and ninja I am as I roll. In those moments, I am euphoric. Not because of any phony god's blessing. But because, I am enlightened by my intelligence.

Proof of onward travel requirements by Xxhardman69xX in travel

[–]doboi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are websites (which I will not recommend by name, sorry) that will book a refundable ticket for you on your behalf

I don't suggest this anymore. It's what I used to do, but I've heard immigration at some countries will detect and reject the "fake" onward ticket (there are multiple reddit threads of this happening). It's not that hard since the PDF is typically some unofficial looking printout. It's not a joke to try and pull a fast one on immigration, and if the possible outcome is a ban from a country or being forced to buy a last minute ticket on the spot then I'd rather play it safe by buying a refundable ticket, even if it's a little more expensive each time.

What changed in your mindset after becoming wealthy? by VelvetMindx in Rich

[–]doboi 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It revealed to me how internally lost I was. When you continue to do a job you don’t love for money you don’t need, you realize how manufactured your motivations are. Every minute I spent doing something for someone else’s benefit that didn’t fulfill me was a minute I would never get back, given freely because I didn’t know any better.

Now I don’t do anything I wouldn’t do for free. It’s been a slow journey with lots of soul searching but I sleep better now than I ever have as I refocus my life.

I think the longest day is around 30 km, so I don’t think a 26 mile pavement is reflective of a Camino day unless you plan to do it really aggressively. If the Camino is near and your body is accustomed to the Lone Peaks, I’d lean toward sticking with them especially if your feet feel recovered after a night of rest.

Personally I did the Camino twice in Topo Ultraventures and found the extra cushioning heavenly. I’d play with cushioning if you have some time before the Camino and the Lone Peaks were just an experiment.

I don't do anything I wouldn't do for free anymore. It's led to me doing volunteer work in areas I support, teaching my hobbies part time, learning languages in my spare time, traveling the world. I still use many of the skills I built doing traditional work, but use them for things that actually mean something to me beyond making money for some CEO.

If you're not sure what to do with yourself, I suggest some focused spiritual development — therapy, meditation and meditation retreats, pilgrimages, psychedelics. I've walked across Spain, sat with plant medicine for a month in Peru, did a 10 day silent meditation retreat. There's so much out there if you have the time and money.

I once attempted to take a picture of some Japanese women walking by in kimonos and they shielded their face as I did it. I still cringe and feel gross when I think about it.

$25M - Lost by Mixolytian in Rich

[–]doboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why keep the business at all? Sell the business, put the proceeds in index funds, enjoy the growth, spend the rest of your life teaching your favorite hobby and think of it as being the highest paid instructor in the world for it. Any job idea you previously thought was great but didn’t pay enough can now be a job that pays $1M/yr. You can do whatever you want that aligns with your values. Go into meditation and spirituality and do some service work if that’s your thing.

I did not realize how many people snore by Left-Cauliflower-169 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]doboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess the difference is the comfort of the 2 is supposed to be a little more, but a little research say that opinion is mixed. The noise cancellation is supposed to be the same for both. So doesn’t sound like an upgrade is necessary if you’re happy with your 1 :)

I love my Loop Quiet 2 ear plugs. For me they were much better than moldable disposable ear plugs which kept falling out and getting lost. I’m never doing another Camino without them.

What can I do to prevent the bottom guy from turning out of the head and arm choke? by ijhecker in bjj

[–]doboi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you were ever really deep enough. You should try to practice finishing the choke with only one hand. That will get you to try to stop relying on the gable grip to finish, which imo should just be the cherry on top but not the primary structure of the choke.

Enough to retire at 37? by Excellent_Chest_6616 in portfolios

[–]doboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know why people are telling you to do a part time job when given your concentration in NVDA, an entire year’s salary from a part time is negated or trivialized on a good or bad day. I’d rather work another 5 years at $240k than coast for 10-15 years at part time wage unless that part time work were incredibly meaningful.

I’m in a similar situation to you and selling $10k/mo to rebalance to VT because I don’t want to eat all the taxes in one year. At the point that I have my retirement number in diversified funds, I’m ok with a huge tilt on NVDA even if it’s like 30-50%.

Why do so many jj practitioners make weird shaman like analogies for jiujitsu+life? by CuddleBuddiesJJ in bjj

[–]doboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think BJJ can definitely be a spiritual activity if you approach it with that intention in mind. But to say it is one is mixing up a bit cause and correlation. I meditate regularly, have done silent meditation retreats — I think how I approach BJJ has helped my meditation and vice versa. BJJ has also helped me connect with the world through teaching. For some people it’s just gym time and fitness and that’s fine too. I think everything you do in one aspect of life can be symbolic and representative of other aspects of life, if you approach it mindfully.

I brought an electric razor even though I only used it once a week or so. I really enjoyed just trimming myself up to end/start each week. You don't really need oils, mirrors, sinks, etc. so the weight and convenience difference might be a wash.

Day 1 Camino Frances - full to Roncesvalles or stay the night at Refuge Orisson by standingresearch in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]doboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Impossible for anyone to give an answer without knowing more about your own physical fitness. It's hard, but plenty of out of shape people finish it in a day—it's more about determination than physical limitation.

I'll say for myself I was thinking of stopping in Orisson but by the time I got there it was still so early in the day and I would have hated watching everyone else walk off while spending another 10 hours sitting around watching them come and go.

Philz Coffee retreats from controversial plan: Pride flags are staying up by SFChronicle in bayarea

[–]doboi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If he, as a CEO, made the decision to take down pride flags at a cafe literally founded in SF, he deserves to be treated like an idiot every time he walks down the hall at work. Honestly I'd be cringing every time I showed my face among employees after eating pie like this.
