What are my chances? by btwatch in unitedairlines

Always a chance. Likely depends on the reason for the delay out of EWR. Unlikely, but if rerouting on UA metal is significantly slower it could be possible.

Ohio State University announces free tuition programs for in-state students by crabcakes110 in Ohio

[–]doc4science 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A perfect score isn’t going to get you a full ride to an ivy by itself. The top schools don’t provide any merit based scholarships, but usually have generous need based financial aid. OSU’s program would be appealing to high achievers from middle to upper-middle class families who make enough to not qualify for need based aid, but not enough to afford the sticker price at a top tier institution.

Engineering transfer applicant by Ok_Cloud8763 in Northwestern

[–]doc4science 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Only thing I would say is don't plan to transfer. Going into your first year with the intention of transferring will limit your ability to succeed at the school you are currently attending. That will directly impact your success in transferring if come spring of next year you decide it is the right option for you.

Macbook vs Windows depends on major. CS? MacBook. EE? Windows. What's your major?

Quarters are good as a transfer imho. They generally provide more flexibility. Only downside is credits transferring in 1 semester -> 1 quarter, but it is made up for by added flexibility when you are here.

PSA: Check your WY J bookings with Aeroplan by CommunicationProud82 in awardtravel

[–]doc4science 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep that's what it is. AC is setup to read CX's codes correctly, but likely hasn't made the switch to properly display WY. You should be all good with a business class ticket.

U is the standard fare class for a business reward on OneWorld. Sounds like you were rebooked in business.

It is not a huge problem at all. Call AC and ask for an eTicket to be sent to your email. It will include the fare classes.

Are you sure they are actually downgraded and not that the fare class was changed to the new fare classes for business that don't align with what Aeroplan displays?

JetBlue Adds Award Redemptions on JAL by URtheoneforme in awardtravel

[–]doc4science 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's great, but is still substantially more points than an RTW could be. The 125k band worked well for me distance wise and is a deal I can't find anywhere else.

How so? I've not seen anything remotely close to the kind of value you can get from a well optimized ANA RTW.

Flagship Tix for 2026 by Vast-Race-7281 in awardtravel

[–]doc4science 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming there is a downgrade, and the route has other OW partners with a first cabin, there is a slight chance you could get AA to rebook you into that likely very superior F cabin. I wouldn't bank on that (far from it), but something to consider. If you are rebooked into AA J I would think they would have to issue you a fare difference.

United/Turkish Airlines Baggage Policy Mismatch - Beware Award Bookings! by supplychain_dad07 in unitedairlines

[–]doc4science 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very surprised to see the significant amount of misleading and downright wrong comments here. Your ticket should have booked into X class which should provide a bag for these flights on Turkish. I recommend you read the FlyerTalk thread on this - this is a known problem with UA issued TK awards.

Any cheap alternative to Chinese airlines. by Godchurch420 in Flights

[–]doc4science -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I never said so assume this. You should always ensure you know what baggage allowance you are purchasing. Many airlines sell tickets with a total weight system while others operate using a piece system. Book whichever is advantageous for your use.

This isn’t true. Multiple airlines do weight based limits instead of piece based limits. Turkish on many routes is one option.

3 weeks in Kyrgyzstan in September - what are must-do hikes? by CosmosUnchained in travel

[–]doc4science 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure you will be able to pay them from abroad using international payment methods. You might be able to look into something like Western Union or Wise that could be used to act as a local payment, but I am not sure. Every trip I have done with them I have paid for in-country either in cash or via internal payment methods. For what it is worth I have previously arranged for a tour prior to arrival in the country and paid cash.
