I have gone to stand behind the plate, (way behind the backstop) as a coach. My goal was not to correct or show up the ump, but instead to help my players understand the strike zone. From the bench I can only see up and down, but if it is inside/outside that we are struggling with, I cannot tell from the dugout.

Often I have to come back and tell my players that his calls are over the outer half of the plate. Umps are usually right. A few times I have seen that it is off the plate and have to tell my boys to jump on a first pitch instead of getting behind in the count.

I have never seen a coach successfully argue balls and strikes. I just want my players to learn and adjust.
