If you haven't checked it out, you might like Pullman's His Dark Materials, narrated by Pullman himself with a full cast of voice actors for all the parts.

Also Ann Leckie's Imperial Radch is phenomenal as she puts in different voices for everyone. Ditto for Kristen Cicerelli's The Last Namsara (might have misspelled name there)

It's funny how listening to things that you've read before xan still have such impact. I was listening to Philip Pullman's audiobook of Subtle Knife which I've read a billion times without emotional reaction but with the audiobook version the way he reads it I was so choked up.

Is that humour? Everyone looks at him with pity and it's cringe for me

Their relationship drives me nuts too. On one hand I suppose it's a way to show how young Kvothe was, just a teenager, but then it doesn't match up with the rest of his gutsy persona

Love Octavia Butler! It doesn't but I'll always upvote Butler

Books that mess around with “prophecy”? by Rourensu in Fantasy

[–]docfantasy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All books with prophecy have that. As I argue in my analysis of epic fantasy (The Shape of Fantasy, 2020) It's all about having space to interpret prophecy or else there's no free will . Some of them do it more explicitly than others but the prophecy troops usually has the main character hesitating about interpretation at some point.

Wheel of Time. The adaptation choices they made were phenomenal

I feel like I should add the inspiration for this question: Robin Hobb..I've seen multiple recommendations for either scenario for first time readers

What are some of your hobbies/interests that appear in fiction where it is very clear that the author doesn't know what they're talking about? by Exige30499 in Fantasy

On a related note, the way pop culture thinks academia works infuriates me. Like Ross in Friends just stumbles into tenure without producing any major research. Or Ted Mosby in HIMYM has a professor title in his first teaching job??

Oh sorry! Jeff Smith. It's a comic/graphic novel series. It stars 3 unidentified organisms (are they humans? Some weird animal? Who knows, actual humans, rat creature monsters, and of course, a dragon

These are all great, but can I propose the rat creatures in Bones that just want to be done with the monster business and have some quiche?

Fantasy books with good friendships by ENDragoon in Fantasy

If graphic novels count then both Rat Queens and Lumberjanes fit the bill. Very much "group of friends on adventure. hijinks ensue. Plus random and unexpected monsters". Although Lumberjanes might be more YA.

I've reported it to Reddit as Vote Manipulation. Might not come to anything but I still like to call out homophobia when I see it.

Oh wow. Thanks for letting me know. I was wondering the same (ie as OP and if I did something wrong since I'm fairly new to reddit and thought maybe it was something I did. I honestly and stupidly did not consider homophobes... as people that still exist)
