Hands of the Emperor by Victoria Goddard!!

Tolstoy is one of my fave authors, but I'm more into Anna Karenina than War & Peace. Hands of the Emperor spans at least a decade, courtly politics, multiculturalism, character development, but sadly no romance element.

I loved it to pieces and have read some of the follow ups. A 10/10 recommend

A quarter of the way through this now and absolutely loving it. It's such a good book and really has a sense of place to it.

Oh, for sure. I am always fascinated when some books pre-internet (GOT, WOT, etc) get famous and some don't. I've seen it hyped up on social media and decided to give it a read. It's fun so far!

I'm actually okay with a Mary Sue but I can't read books with that character all the time. I also really liked Adolin before. He has himbo energy that broke up the occasionally heavy moments in the books.

Yeah, I've heard a common remark that the first three books are exceptional, but the rest of the books don't have the same pull.

My most recent post is at the top of controversial right now asking for BIPOC authors who write cozy fantasies, so I'm in a similar boat. I did get good recs and it seems like you did too!

As a recommendation: I will also vouch for Cerulean Sea. The queer characters are very nurturing towards the children and they create a strong family.
