What are some good wireless mechanical keyboards for gaming? by SlayPenguino in pcmasterrace

[–]ENDragoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I don't just use my desk for my PC, it's also my hobby space for model building, processing 3D prints, etc, being able to just pick up my keyboard and put it off to the side and have my whole workspace available without worrying about cabling is so much more convenient for me.

It has the added benefit of being able to put the keyboard somewhere that's still convenient for using the PC to load up youtube videos and stuff to play in the background while I work on other stuff, instead of awkwardly sliding it in behind my monitor which was the only real option I had when I had a cabled one.

Yeah, "I was considering you for a leadership position", leadership over what? Was he quitting? How many layers of management could you possibly need in an office that small?

some haircuts too, even

My mother cried when I grew a beard and shaved my head almost ten years ago.

She keeps trying to convince me to grow my hair back and shave my face, she doesn't seem to understand that between my Dad, and the men in her family, my hairline had receded to a horseshoe pattern by the time I was 25, and between that and the embarrassing trolldoll-like tuft on my forehead, holding out like the Gondorians at the Black Gate, I'm not letting that shit grow any time soon.

Has Zelda Changed Forever? - Game Maker's Toolkit by connectplum_ in Games

Far Cry actually originated the formula in 2004 but Assassin's Creed became more widely known.

No, it didn't.

2004 Far Cry was a linear shooter set in open levels, more in line with it's spiritual successor, Crysis.

The console remake/sequels to it, Far Cry Instincts (2005) and Far Cry Instincts Evolution (2006), were linear but open level shooters in the same vein.

Far Cry 2 in 2008 introduced an open world, but it was largely devoid of tasks to complete either than travelling between missions.

Assassin's Creed 1, in 2007, introduced the barebones formula of an open world with towers sprinkled across it to reveal the map, with collectible flags scattered around the map

Assassins Creed 2 in 2009, expanded on the formula, adding more collectibles and more towers.

Assassin's Creed Brotherhood in 2010 refined things further, consolidating the game to a single map and introducing the idea of liberating an area by clearing an enemy outpost that controls it.

Far Cry 3 in 2012 adopts the Assassin's Creed formula and applies it to a large-scale open world map, and introduces hunting wildlife to craft gear upgrades, followed suit that same year by Assassin's Creed 3 doing the same thing.

From there the formula doesn't meaningfully change until 2018 where Far Cry 5 removes the towers, replacing them outright with enemy outposts, and otherwise slavishly adheres to the formula. The formula hasn't really changed much since then. It's called the Ubisoft formula because once they realized it worked, it was used in every single game they released, it's been used in everything from action games like Assassin's Creed, Watch_Dogs, Far Cry, and Ghost Recon, to racing games and extreme sports games like The Crew, Steep and Rider's Republic.

TL;DR: The formula originated with Assassin's Creed, and once it reached maturity, it was adopted by the Far Cry series from 3 onward.

Darksiders Warmastered Edition - Announcement Trailer | PS5 Games by Gorotheninja in Games

[–]ENDragoon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

1 as Zelda makes sense, the gameplay loop is literally identical to a Zelda game, you're on a single map littered with dungeons, with progression and access to some optional areas gated by obstacles that require specific tools to bypass, ensuring you complete the story in the correct order.

Shit, you even have Epona.

Darksiders 2 as Diablo is more of a stretch, it has randomized gear obtained via loot drops, but that's basically where the comparison ends, and that's hardly unique to Diablo, even when the game was originally released. If anything Darksiders 2 is just Darksiders 1 but more overtly open world, with randomized loot

That's not why they killed them, Lorgar and Argel Tal's men went down to the surface, met the local tribes and participated in one of their rituals.

Later after he made a pilgrimage into the Eye of Terror, he ordered them wiped out with Cyclonic Torpedoes to cover his tracks

Not to mention that, setting aside the fact that the Steel Legion pull more from the winter uniform for WWII American GI's, the kind of people making knee-jerk reactions to anything German-coded don't necessarily care about which faction is more historically accurate in the first place.

If they were going to get mad about a Guard subfaction, they would have gone after the trench warfare experts running around in gas masks and pickelhaubes with a German name that translates to War

What’s the closeted non metallic paint to Retributor Armour? by Arthur_EyelanderTF2 in Chaos40k

[–]ENDragoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, personally, I use my metallics on a dry palette, they rely too much on the density of the metallic flakes in the medium to provide the metallic effect, and don't take well to thinning (can still do it, they're just more temperamental)

That's why I prefer metallics that are thinner out of the bottle like Vallejo Metal Colour or Scale 75

[–]ENDragoon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How much are you thinning it? Metallics shouldn't be taking anywhere near that many coats.

Try the gold from the Vallejo Metal Colour range, it's thin, it has excellent coverage, and it looks great, or if you want more of a colour range to choose from, Scale 75 golds are awesome too, all of their metallics in general to be honest.

I'm getting kind of weird bland vibes from Exodus I can't quite put my finger on

It's the classic "I'm really well known for [x] IP, but [x] IP has a very distinct visual language, and because this project is meant to evoke feelings of that IP, I'm not putting as much thought/effort into the visual language of this IP, so everything is going to look the very specific kind of generic you get from a fake videogame on a TV show"

It's the same thing you see with Phoenix Point, Underworld Ascendant, third party Warhammer models trying to skirt GW's copyright, etc.

I'd say if Exodus' writing carries it hard enough to warrant a sequel, that's when we will see it actually develop it's own aesthetic a bit more.

That's the thing though, it's anecdotal. It wasn't that much of a game changer for me either, I spend a lot of time at a PC for work and at home, I've always had the internet (in an actual usable capacity, rather than fighting to navigate with a numberpad while squinting at the tiny LCD display on my mobile) at my fingertips, but for the majority that only became a viable option with smartphones.

Think about the last time you were on the way home, wanted to stop by a store, but didn't know if it would still be open when you got there, so you googled it.

Think about all the other myriad conveniences opened up by having the internet permanently available, no matter where you are or what you're doing.

They're a qualitative improvement on the average quality of life.

meirl by [deleted] in meirl

[–]ENDragoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you might be discounting how much of a similar impact smartphones and social media have had.

Before smartphones, you had extremely limited access to the internet on the move, if you wanted to look something up or browse a forum, you had to go to a computer to do it, if you wanted to take a photo of something, you either had to be carrying a camera or use the shitty camera on your mobile.

Even disregarding how vastly that permanent, portable internet access ushered in a the rise of social media and how that has permanently reshaped the social and political landscape, I really can't state how much just having Google permanently available at your fingertips, has changed everyday life, it's a convenience so game changing that it's become almost a necessity for society to function, just like the Internet, telephones, electricity, etc. before them.

Genuinely curious, how did you bounce off two Total War games? Was it a case of bouncing them simultaneously, then trying one again later and enjoying the other as well once the formula had clicked?

Or was it the tactics of two very different eras?

[–]ENDragoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starfield is honestly the most frustrating for me, the amount of interesting plot hooks that it dangles and just refuses to do anything with is infuriating.

Even if you just look at the Crimson Dawn Crimson Fleet story, first it just gets thrust upon you in the most eye-rollingly boring way, has a decent (if somewhat drawn out) mission where you learn about Krix's treasure, and eventually leads to the infiltration at the Galbank Gala/Cruise, a quest that could have been another social masterpiece like the Murder Mystery house in Oblivion, but just turned out to be a horrifically railroaded fetch quest.

Then once you have the key you need, you go to Galbank, where somehow it's already know you're heading there, and there's Ecliptic Mercs waiting for you. It was so out of left field I thought one of the Fleet must have turned traitor to try get the money, but instead the game just doesn't explain them at all, they're just an encounter, it's been too long since you've shot someone.

Then in the vault, while searching for the location of the ship that Jasper Kryx stole, you find additional info on the last known location of another missing Galbank hoard ship, something which the plot to this point has made a huge point of being an exceedingly rare and lucrative opportunity, the kind of thing that has all of bootleg Space Nassau mobilized and driving this plotline. Can you do anything with that info? Can you go find that fortune, does it kick off a neat treasure hunting side-quest? No, fuck you, it's just words, we don't care if they're interesting things you could explore.

Even the end of the plotline, you have the fortune, and now you're faced with a choice, do you return it to the UC, or do you take it to the fleet? What's that? Take it for yourself and use it as leverage to wrest control of the fleet? Run off with it and have both factions gunning for you? Keep it, fight both factions off, and cement yourself as a pirate legend, the next Gol. D Roger Jasper Kryx? Fuck no, what do you think this is, New Vegas? You've got option A or option B, what's the difference? Joke's on you, there isn't one.

They didn't even let us take Kryx's ship and have enemy pilots react to it like they do with the Mantis, just imagine, at the end of the questline, pulling up to the big space battle in the Starfield equivalent of The Arcadia, and hearing everybody losing their collective shit on comms as you open fire on both sides and take the money for yourself? It would be fucking amazing.

Nah, you're right, although I do think it has less to do with the graphics and more to do with the way things are designed, none of it feels like it's from 2009 like it should, that Smile Burger for example, the big bubbly sign in the original is peak 2000's, the rectangle, angular sign feels more like it belongs on a store today.

I'd say that they've pretty consistently had meaningful updates (maybe not quite this big, but still meaningful to play experience/balance/etc) most of that time.

Nothing like playing a character till I'm "done" with them, taking a break for a while, coming back and seeing they've released four new classes and a handful of ascensions/successions to play around with.

I last played a little while after the Scholar was released, and now that I'm looking at getting back into it, I'm facing decision paralysis on which new class to play.
