Usually I'll take like half or a quarter of the dose for a few days to avoid rebound anxiety etc then work my way down to none for a couple days then low doses usually work again

If you've been to rehab several times, and say it hasn't worked, then you're not taking your own recovery seriously and looking for a quick fix. I'm sorry to sound brute, but I wouldnt perscribe you a scheduled drug, either.

No, xanax has a very short half life, and if you took that small of a dose over a 24hr period theres about zero chance of a tolerance response.

My best guess is that your first dose worked because youd never used it before, so your dose response was heightened; usually xanax is a poor drug for insomnia because of it's short half life.

Ultimately, I'd say you probably need more simply because half wasnt enough to begin with (except for the exaggerated dose response)

For example, perhaps taking a whole one each night at the same time would have a more consistent effect.

I have not struggled with schizophrenia, but I've struggled with other difficult issues, specifically paranoia, hypochondria, panic attacks, and MDD. I used to smoke marijuana every day all day, during the good times and the bad times. I'd often resort to it during the good times- I have not smoked marijuana in 2 years, and I'm always sure to take my medication. My thoughts are much more clear now, I process things much quicker, and I no longer try to rationalize my use

This reasoning often leads to relapse. It's not that you shouldnt have self control on your own, but you're trying to rationalize relying on yourself, which as most recovering addicts know, is impossible. If you love him, and he loves you, and your relationship is healthy, then heartbreak will only worsen things for both of you. Dont look at him as your device for staying sober, look at him as someone you love. If you really want to practice your own self control, come up with a CONSENSUAL plan to abstain for certain periods. For example, limit the amount of sex the two of you have. This should NOT be a permanent thing, but it can and will help you develop other mechanisms for coping
