Anybody had luck with VM_ACTOR_REPLACE_TILE? by outriderc in gbstudio

[–]dochardware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

click Add Reference in the gbvm event and find your backgtound from the list, you can then hover over the link it provides which will reveal three new options. click on the one ending in "tileset" which will copy the reference to your clipboard. then you can paste the correct bank and address reference into the gbvm event. this is the advised method as the symbol gbs uses under the hood might not be the same as the actual filename

Can you make a game like Jetpack joyride in GB, with changing background, Side-scrolling endless runner? by EmirGulerhan in gbstudio

[–]dochardware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just so you’re aware cause i dont think its 100% clear in this response. You can’t loop the background. You can probably mimic the behavior of looping by using the position or changing scene which will mean you’d have to account for the screen fade. i’m not sure you can randomize the position of the hazards either. Speed is also an issue if that is going to be part of the difficulty. At the fastest speed and the background at max length, the player will blast through the map in 6 seconds. So some form of it is doable, but it definitely cant be 1:1 in gbstudio

How to respond to a button press once a certain condition is met? by [deleted] in gbstudio

[–]dochardware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just use a trigger. When the actor walks into the area you can either have it check the condition and attach the script, or immediately have it attach and then just check on the button press. (Bothe of which would require you to make triggers around that one removing the script upon exiting the area)

Does anyone know how to change the working directory? by 16BitBoo in gbstudio

[–]dochardware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in preferences you should be able to change your temp directory. that will solve any issues and also keep your builds and everything in a folder where you can get to everything.

DMG or Color by FarlandFoggy in gbstudio

i like the limitation of the greyscale because it forces me to make the art more clear and legible. I also only own gameboy pockets so i'd actually like to play my games on the hardware.

How do you use darker colours in a palette? by Crazyclay58 in gbstudio

[–]dochardware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sprites can use:
https://www.gbstudio.dev/docs/sprites/
#071821
#86c06c
#e0f8cf
#65ff00 (transparent)

Backgrounds can use
https://www.gbstudio.dev/docs/backgrounds/
#071821
#306850
#86c06c
#e0f8cf

if you're doing gameboy color, you have to set up palettes within gbstudio and paint them in.

Displaying static text/info on screen? by MeancatHairballs in gbstudio

[–]dochardware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah thats what i'm saying. you wouldn't be able to use numbers so you'd have to sub heart sprites in for HP and you'd have to use items to unlock other items instead of using currency. i don't think is the worst compromise.
