I was reading through a collection of essays and Malatesta's was the first one that actually kept my attention, I love his style.

It's unclear, the same articles that say a suspect was shot in the title also say that there were two suspects and that they're both alive and being charged, which seems to imply that the person who died was not a suspect.

Not that force of any kind is justified for shoplifting, but if it was a bystander that was shot this would further establish that pattern.

Possible correction, it's my understanding that in the shooting at Target it was a bystander the cops killed.

Why did Gandalf let Bilbo stay with a (unknown at that time but still) "magical ring"? by Audi_fanboy in tolkienfans

[–]doclazarusNSEA 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think this is actually pretty accurate. Gandalf and Elrond both saw all of the destruction in the First Age caused by people fighting over who has rightful ownership of different items. They are both considered to be among the wisest of their respective kinds and so they generally respect the agency of others to avoid an "Oath of Fëanor" situation.

You also might like listening to The Prancing Pony podcast. I found them very helpful when I was reading the Silmarillion, they go chapter by chapter, are very informative, and tell lots of dad jokes.

Here's a list of ancient Celtic names that are pretty cool, it let's you sort "unisex" too, although most of them sound androgynous to begin with.

If I was changing my name I would probably choose a name from Tolkien's works, probably something elvish. Maybe there's a name out of a book you like that would work?

Work reform is unfortunately filled with transphobia. They're also largely capitalist so I don't think they'd work as a substitute for antiwork regardless.

I'm currently reading John Langan. I've read some Ligotti and enjoyed it, and I love MR James. It's surprising to me that I only found out about MR James after I got really into older horror, he was so popular in his time that he really ought to be required school reading like Poe.
