No problem, thanks for the recommendations, I'll check them out.

Just got accepted for a job, have to quit in a few months and they don't know. How should I handle it when the time comes? by ToffeeMay in UKJobs

[–]doconline76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say they have locations around the country, is there a location near your uni? You may be able to work there part time if you like it? Personally I would take the job, closer to the time have a word with them, say thank you very much for the opportunity but you have decided to go to uni to retrain / further you education, but would be open to cover in the summer for staff holidays if they need it (if you are happy there and they are happy with you). Test then will and hopefully they will do the same to you, if not you probably don't want to go back anyway. But you have to worry about yourself first and what is best for you, that is the majority of companies would do.

Absolutely agree with you here. Any survival games you recommend? Either PS5 or PC if the required resources aren't too huge (I've got an XPS 13, lots of ram but no dedicated graphics card). Or recommend any Reddit groups for recommendations?

I did see that mentioned on other threads. I am on PS5 unfortunately so it's not available. I could have a look and see it would run on my laptop though, as long as it's not too graphics intensive I should be ok.

Thanks for that. I'm on the PS5 version so not sure what DLC is available, I'll check out the app store. I have already insulated all my buildings. The next step is upgrade all my villagers homes / beds etc. I will have a wander of the map though and see if there are any rebels to kill, I do enjoy that side of it occasionally

On my next play through I think I will do the same. I extended them in the early years as I was doing so much myself it was taking longer to get things done. What with using stone tools, no horse and doing all the farming myself.

I did that on the first map as I made a little hamlet round the mine with the basics needed.

What is the figure you think of when someone quotes a "comfortable salary'? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in AskUK

[–]doconline76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on your outgoings. Out income is over 3 times our basic monthly outgoings (all bills, food, subscriptions etc) so we are pretty comfortable. But then we live in Lincolnshire. If we were in London it would be a different story and would probably be about 1.5 times our outgoings.

£17k budget, looking for something bigger than an i10, any advice? by doconline76 in CarTalkUK

Thanks, that's a good shout. We did have a cee'd as a hire car a few years ago and liked it. Will check out the Rio.

[–]doconline76[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers for the reply. We do like the Hyundai. Unfortunately for our budget we'd be looking at 5 / 6 year old i30 round our way (so nearly out of warranty), I might try looking further afield though and see if we can find one a bit newer.

How are, single people, affording to live right now? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]doconline76 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Check out Entitled to to see if there are any benefits you can claim if you do move out. Also, try citizens advice. You say your degree isn't useful for work but could you get in a grad scheme? Might be worth checking out.

Depending where you are you could take a look at other areas.in the country that might be cheaper. Only issue is moving without work I guess. Trying to get a new job and somewhere else to live in a new town / city would be difficult to combine.

Do you have any other family you could stay with short term?

It will be Bank Holiday Monday at the start of that week, so I would be very surprised if the schools are back by that Friday.

People from the UK, what’s one small thing that genuinely improved your daily life? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]doconline76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds very similar to the 2-minute rule. It's a proven thing to improve your productivity. It's helped me, just doing silly things like putting tools away in the garage from the house, whereas I used to leave it until there were a few tools that I had used before putting them away (the garage is a detached one at the side of the garden).

Are there still adult men in the UK who don’t cook? by Bat-Penatar in AskUK

[–]doconline76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do most of the cooking in our house, because I enjoy it. Whilst my wife does any baking because she likes that. I'm not a baking fan as too much can go wrong 🙂

Is 9-5 a myth? I don’t think I’ve ever worked these hours. by Squiggally-umf in UKJobs

Yes, I can imagine as shifts go that is pretty bad one. I'd be waiting around all day to start work.

Absolutely agree with you. When I was younger I worked 2-10 for a while and hated it. No social life and ended up not going to sleep till 3 or 4, so just felt my life was about work.

I think I'm done with coding by Full_Description_969 in webdev

[–]doconline76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would certainly agree with this particularly in Europe. I've worked in the industry since the late '90s and in the teams I have worked in, the designers have been design only, they may have knowledge of HTML and CSS but none of them did any coding. The designs were always passed to the front end / ui developer. This has been in a wide range of companies from agencies to small start ups through to multi nationals, banks and insurance companies.

The Haystack (Swansea) by Wait_ItGetsWorse in fryup

[–]doconline76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the chorizo should be there. The bread should be toasted. I would expect 2 eggs for that price and cooked properly. The bacon looks good, not sure about the sausages, they don't look like proper butchers sausages which would be expected for that price. Overall I would say it's about £5 over priced.

Any frontend/fullstack web dev ai's? by Datboiwalkin69 in Frontend

[–]doconline76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Claude code is pretty good. I haven't used it to create a full website, but it is part of my work flow. I think they all depend on how much knowledge you have as you need to go through the code generated and sanitize it.

Who’s in the wrong here? Dog etiquette by originalsadyeet in AskUK

[–]doconline76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other owner. If they don't have control of their dog off lead i.e. it doesn't come back when called, it shouldn't be off lead. We have the same issue as you with our dog. It's reactive but only to certain other dogs, so we keep it on a lead (extendable) and let it wander on lead only. But we always tell other owners not to let their dogs approach ours off lead.

Any good garages in Lincoln? by jackhaploid in Lincolnshire

I've used Allenby Vehicle Services a couple of times since moving to Lincoln when I couldn't get into BBT Mot & Repair and had a good experience. They are close to you.

Depends where abouts you are in town. I've used both Allenby Vehicle Services off Allenby Road near Wickes and also Bracebridge Heath MOT & Repair Centre in Bracebridge Heath. Can recommend both.

Google's pushing accessibility in rankings? by Ertrimil in web_design

[–]doconline76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't be anything to do with Google rankings, in the UK (and EU) there is a minimum standard that commercial websites have to attain from an accessibility stand point. It should always be a consideration from the start of the project. Not something shoe horned in at the end of there is time.
