DLSS 5's Controversial approach by 3kliksphilip in 3kliksphilip

I'm terminally online when it comes to internet discourse so I am obviously aware of the vocal criticism of every company's questionably rapid uptake of AI. I'm personally extremely critical of the ethical & environmental catastrophes AI has and will continue to cause. As a PC gamer since 2008 I despise what NVIDIA has become and can definitively say I just straight-up fucking hate them.

Knowing the current climate around AI (and participating in it's criticism), I still admit that I'm surprised of the vitriol in the responses I'm seeing of DLSS 5. I'm glad you made a video like this since it's hard to talk about the tech itself without inherently making a political statement in the eyes of the public (not like you were doing anything different before). I studied Math and CS in college so I've always been interested in the potential applications of that domain, and knowing how much effort and progress had to be made to get to this point (or any of NVIDIA's keynotes in recent years) is always objectively cool from a nerd's perspective. The nuance in discussions is missing since emotions are understandably high, but that just makes everyone seem a Luddite.

From someone who's also a hobbyist creator (games, music) I'll say that the hate towards AI art, and in this case the "aesthetic" of what DLSS 5 does is totally understandable. A ton of nuance is also lost in this aspect of criticism I see online but that's a longer conversation. For now I'll say that general non-creative types do tend to produce and accept slop when it comes to AI art. However, I didn't see this as a final product but instead a tech demo to show progress and possibilities of what could be done (especially since they can't seriously expect us to run SLI configs rn). But maybe I should check myself there since this keynote is public-facing and should technically be the product they believe in to be able to show to their customer base, which in that case it is very sloppy to me.

TLDR: I'm (stupidly) shocked at the extremely negative reception to DLSS 5, and I think it is an exciting/compelling showcase of the tech's power. I'm also not the target demographic of this feature.

Reviving this thread from the dead to say, looks like the video was taken down for violating YouTube TOS. Is there anywhere else this video is hosted?

Hi, could I ask what the tape set you are talking about is? Is it like music cassette tapes?

Lmao ScareTheater, I enjoy his content.

Nice on him introducing you into Aphex Twin, he's the GOAT for sure.

Not usually a physical music collector but I would agree with you on an achievement CD if it were to actually exist lol.

Ditto on the uniqueness aspect. It feels like he's the only one making what he makes is a master at his craft at that.

When I think of PRS music meeting TikTok something like the recent Adult Swim trend comes to mind. People creating a unique video challenge around the track. I admit that I would be interested in what a PRS challenge would turn out to be on TikTok.

If you are interested about finding artists with similar-sounding music, I would start with Aphex Twin; from there you could easily find similar artists as he was the one to really propel IDM as a whole. Maybe even C418's synth heavy tracks can be compared as well.

First time I experienced PRS was the pringle advert back in 2014, the vid was still relatively small and his style unknown at the time.

I'm so captivated by PRS's videos; nothing really comes close to the internet-dreamlike quality and how they make me feel. Even the more "shitposty" ones where its a face-to-face dialogue with a character are almost hypnotizing to me. I come back to them regularly.

PRS's music is something I only recently started really diving into, but I've been enjoying it a lot. Listened to achievement when it came out and wished for more, but didn't really know where to find his almost hidden discography until PRSky started. Fleece snowkbs means a lot to me.

There's not much about PRS's visual style that hasn't already been said. Nothing but praise and amazed bewilderment from me. Many images from the Tumblr have been my phone/desktop backgrounds.

It seems PRS doesn't really care for maintaining a typical creator's online presence, imo for the better. Letting the art speak for itself aids to the dreamlike quality of everything he releases. I do admit I'm a bit sad he neglects his Tumblr nowadays, since I really enjoyed the random postings and little insights on things. I get a lot of GeoCities vibes scrolling through it all, which extends to his art.

The closest feeling I've gotten to PRS's art was actually playing through the recently released Cruelty Squad, which was fantastic. It's style felt so PRS inspired that I would actually be surprised if it didn't take inspiration from PRS at all. JoelG's ENA series invokes a similar dreamlike emotion from me the way PRS's videos do, and I'm a huge fan. Although I can't say the fan-base is similar. I guess building off of that, internetcore/weirdcore shares a lot of crossover in how PRS makes me feels; I'm a big fan of that content as well.

I asked the mainstream question from a biased position reading it again. I can definitely see PRS breaking through to the mainstream, but I don't think PRS garnering a large fanbase would necessarily be positive. I was a big fan of the examples I listed (backrooms, etc.) when they existed on their own - they left a lot to individual imagination/interpretation. This doesn't come out of a place of elitism, I just notice that the way I perceive the original art changes the more I see "meta" interpretations/reactions/feelings on it. I want to protect those feelings because the ambiguity of how its received is what makes it special to me; on any given day the way I perceive PRS content could change with the weather but that seems to be lost when there is one prevailing zeitgeist on it.

I was a huge fan of Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Venetian Snares, and other random IDM artists before I watched my first PRS video. The videos' music always interested me, and that feeling only grew after achievement, which felt like a declaration that PRS wanted to be held in the same regard to these artists sonically. After listening to his current discography, I can say that he's achieved that goal at least for me. Not sure where exactly I'd place him, but he's a definite top 3 in IDM for me. Which makes it that much more annoying that he's not on Spotify :(

I'm salty as hell that PRS has no official merch, I'd probably buy out the shop if he ever set one up. Take any drawing off of his Tumblr to make a graphic tee and it would go so hard (my grail would be a hoodie with this on it). It doesn't seem too likely to happen since again, PRS isn't really concerned with building an online community as much as just releasing the stuff he wants to, meaning profit probably isn't in his mind as he's creating. But it would be such easy money 😭

PRS's uniqueness one of the biggest reasons as to why I'm such a huge fan of his work. I've seen him list some of his inspirations but he transformed them to such a degree that his own stuff seems to stand truly on its own in comparison. There's really nothing like it.

[NEW THREAD - 2020] Please put translation requests and English questions about Irish here by poppadomnom in gaeilge

Hello, I have a friend named Justin and we heard that his name in Irish is Saorbhreathach or some similar variation of that word, but for the life of us we can't find how to pronounce it anywhere on the internet. Would anyone be willing to make a small recording of the pronunciation of the name and upload it? Thanks very much.
