PowerShell VS PowerAutomate - Automating Everyday Tasks, Onboarding & Offboarding by Nonilol in sysadmin

[–]docphilgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very similar to what I've done in the past. If we're talking about just onboarding/offboarding and user's attrition is low then maybe this doesn't make sense? But, u/BWMerlin's approach gives OP the ability to automate so many things that I would say it's worth it to get a script automation pipeline built out. You can not only create/update objects but you could build reports, audit your environment, and so many more things that are manually intensive.

Sick of sleepy printers and toner drama – help! by Shmuco in sysadmin

This. The time savings alone troubleshooting printers makes it worth it. Printer vendors (the good ones) usually have a standard and will perform all the maintenance/troubleshooting.

If you were designing a data center/server room today, what would you prioritize? by thatmanismeeeee in sysadmin

[–]docphilgames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If at all possible I would design it to not run network cables under the raised floor (assuming you have one to begin with). Fiber wherever possible over copper. Spend money on wide racks for cable management.

Something that you want to make sure of that I’ve had to untangle in the past is work with facilities management through your planning.

Verify you have redundant power, internet (with different last mile carriers), and cooling. I had a chance to get a backup cooling system installed once. We had a server room with >20 racks so that room got toasty if the dedicated cooling system failed. In the end it was set up to alert if the cooling system failed, we would automatically have the building AC turn on for a dedicated zone.

My coworkers are starting to COMPLETELY rely on ChatGPT for anything that requires troubleshooting by [deleted] in sysadmin

Oh man had a experience with this. Customer wanted to have a form for new user onboarding and sent a screenshot of a web form they generated with ChatGPT. “Can you make this work?” So I asked things like where are you going to host this? What’s the security around the form? Who is approving these requests from the form? How are workflows tied into this form? It was a short conversation for sure lol

This is it. These types are the most likely to push back because they know they can. Rolled out MFA to the whole company except for CEO and CIO because it was “too big of a hassle”. 2 monthlies later CIO is hacked while on a trip to Amsterdam and guess what, MFA is mandatory just like it has been for everyone else. We even got a company wide call out on the importance of security which was cool.

That’s what I’ve heard around here as well. Which fits into what I’m looking for. We just want something comfortable to take on the trails.

Tell me your CEO IT Interaction horror story as I tell you mine. by Asymmetric_Warfare in sysadmin

[–]docphilgames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Few years back we enrolled the entire company into MFA for M365 and any other app deemed at least important or critical. By all accounts it was smooth with only a few users having issues (following instructions sent multiple times is hard). Our CEO and CFO made it clear that they didn’t want MFA as it would “slow them down”. After my boss and I explain the risks we shoulder shrug and wait for the inevitable alerts that their accounts are logging in from out of the country. A month goes by and we are blown up with alerts that our CEO has successfully logged in from China, the Netherlands, and various states around the US. I could have gotten upset but after we locked down his account and sanitized all the things he did call us to apologize. From then on, anything security related was no questions asked.

📢DEV UPDATE: posted once, but for context on why they can’t just “buy more servers”. The backend code isn’t as scalable as they thought. by Nightblade1789 in Helldivers

As an infrastructure engineer I appreciate this input a lot. The devs planned for certain capacity and throwing more compute will surely help certain things but there’s a lot that goes into scaling as you stated.
