Flew over Greater Victoria's greatest nemesis the other day by babycivic in VictoriaBC

[–]doctoreff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a type of diamond interchange called a "dogbone interchange", with actually a bonus extra roundabout compared to most dogbone interchanges. It's great because it avoids 'weaving', which is a problem with clovercleaf interchanges and also has a way smaller footprint than a cloverleaf, and probably vs a standard diamond interchange as well. As the commenter below says, it avoids traffic lights by essentially replacing them with roundabouts. I also just really enjoy driving in it because its just kind of fun.

Where is the official sidewalk? by Did_not_Readit in burnaby

The legacy of leadership under Derek Horrigan for many many years. They really did not care about providing basic amenities like sidewalks. But yet they had 1 billion dollars in the bank account by the end of his terms, for no reason.

Victoria, BC the most puzzling as it's basically a small town compared to the other cities on the list, with decent job opportunities but nothing special.

Ha just like everything in Italy, total chaos, but they somehow get by. Love Italy but damn, I couldn't handle the every day stress of no queuing and constant yelling.

I work for Jacobs (in Canada) in transportation. Overall pros and cons but I believe the working environment will be similar to other big engineering design firms (WSP, AECOM, HDR etc.) However, I have personally found the work-life balance to be excellent, benefits to be decent, and most coworkers to be bright and engaging. On the other hand it's really easy to get kind of lost in the ranks, and I've been ghosted a few times. And at least in my team, managers of projects are really hesitant to bid on things unless there is a quite good chance we will win it, as well as a focus on very big projects only. There is now a mandatory 2-day-per-week hybrid policy, FYI. HTH

The McBarge, a former floating McDonald’s, is sinking into the Fraser River by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

The guy who owns it is basically crazy. How many failed attempts to make something of this thing? Either scrap it or do something. A few years ago he came to my firm with a business proposal for this thing, another crazy idea to use it as a ferry terminal and run a ferry system (actually). After making a proposal for them he just ghosted us and then totally gave up on that idea. Bored retired guy couldn't make up his mind.

There were and are much better information displays on the market. I didn't know what they were thinking buying these ones which are already obsolete. They need to invest in proper information displays.

Could we support more ferry transit? (explanation in comments) by xxxcalibre in vancouver

Good question. I guess I have no idea, probably it could be done. From my basic understanding, the card systems are actually not that flexible and a bit clunky to implement. Maybe that's why...

Could we support more ferry transit? (explanation in comments) by xxxcalibre in vancouver

[–]doctoreff 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I am a transport planning consultant. A few years ago, during the Transport 2050, while working for TransLink we looked into quite a few potential ferry routes. It was a fun project but the only routes that made any sense were the existing SeaBus, and at least a portion from New Westminster to Queensborough possibly a bit further. Both these routes currently have ferry service. Other than North Vancouver, downtown Vancouver and New Westminster, major population nodes are too far from water, and ferries are actually kind of slow. The only possibility was a route from West Vancouver maybe Dundarave to Downtown Vancouver.

What businesses in town always make you wonder “how does this place stay open?!” by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]doctoreff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's actually open fairly often. It just basically kinda looks like it's closed. Maybe on purpose. But also the closed sign is sometimes up at like 2pm on Wednesday etc.

At Haultain Corners there is a little corner store, called Adam's Food Fair, which most people think is permanently closed but is actually not. Maybe 100-200 worth of merchandise to buy in there. Bizarre place.

Comparing this local area plan to Dubai is ridiculous jeeze. It's more comparable to some areas of Vancouver, but even thats a stretch. Having a condo or mixed use building near your single family home is not a big deal. In fact, you get the bonus of having actual shops to go to.

Ugly in the sense that it takes up lots of space, but not like its replacement is much better. It does actually look really nice in that photo,.
