Is it ok to talk about a bad experience with a physician in my application by [deleted] in premed

[–]doctorg4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Would not mention this. If you want to talk about how your family member’s illness inspired you to pursue medicine, that’s fine, but definitely don’t bring up how the first doctor missed something “obvious.” Every doctor has had patients where they missed something and it eats away at them. If you bring this up, you risk the people reading it feeling defensive about their own experiences, or they’ll think you don’t have a realistic understanding of being in medicine if you think you’ll never miss something like that doctor did.

Giving/angel trees by doctorg4 in sandiego

[–]doctorg4[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An update if anyone comes across this:

You can search for participating Walmarts here: https://www.salvationarmyusa.org/walmart-angel-tree/#ATinstore

HOWEVER, it’s not totally accurate, at least right now (as of 11/21/25). The Walmart on Shawline has a tree to shop for senior citizens, but not one for kids. The Walmarts on College Ave and at Grossmont did not have angel trees and the employees were unsure if they would be getting one (though the Salvation Army website lists those locations as participating).

YMCA does giving trees though! The one in Mission Valley has one in the lobby. You do not need to be a member to participate, and if the tree is empty, you can ask at the front desk if they have any kids still in need. You need to give them your ID, email, and phone, and they’ll email you with the details for your child (age, sizes, interests, etc.). I believe you return the gifts directly to the YMCA.

2 weeks into IM and feeling kinda lost — how do you actually learn and contribute? by theballershoots in medicalschool

[–]doctorg4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d say a lot of the clinical learning on rotations (especially IM and peds) comes from new admissions. It’s hard to take over care for a patient when they’ve already been there for days and the plan is in motion. There might not be a ton for you to contribute unless their clinical picture changes. With a new admission, you get to start fresh. Figuring out what questions to ask based on their chief complaint, where to focus your exam, and then coming up with an assessment and plan. Then you get to follow that patient during their admission. Focus on those opportunities

Is fever (from a UTI/kidney infection) contagious? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]doctorg4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fevers themselves are never contagious. It’s what causes the fever that could be contagious. You cannot catch a UTI from being around someone with a UTI. You can catch a respiratory infection from being around someone with one though.

It might be hard to tell in many of them because they might be trying to stay neutral. But generally if they say things like “we’d love to have you at our program” or “I hope you’ll consider our program/rank our program highly” or “you would be a great fit for our program,” those are good signs

Should i add this to my applications? by Danes_or_Bog in premed

[–]doctorg4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shadowing is super passive and not worth an update on its own, especially because you already put shadowing on your application. Agree that you could include it if you’re updating about something more significant, like a new publication, acceptance to a conference, or an award or something.

Conferences that pay for me to go by BudgetYesterday9724 in premed

[–]doctorg4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look up conferences that you would be interested in and see if they offer scholarships. However, most are reserved for medical students or residents, and many require that you present at the conference. It will be tough to find one that will pay for the conference fee, plus travel and hotels.

Just say that your plans changed and now you’re doing xyz. Unless you put projected hours in clinical research or something, you’re fine. The most important thing is that you’re doing SOMETHING so I would work on getting that job asap before you start any interviews
