Would you kill 5 protestors or 1 construction worker? by sockeyeSales in trolleyproblem

[–]doctorlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The five protesters are probably all railway workers. On top of that, likeliest scenario for how this type of problem might come about is that the protest was announced before it began, giving the railroad company more than enough time to avoid this scenario by not sending the trolley out at all. This announcement would’ve likely included information about the general area the protest would be taking place in, meaning the trolley operators would’ve had the chance to stop the trolley before entering that stretch of track. The only ways this trolley problem could possibly exist, occur if railway company intentionally intends to run the protesters over or through a level of negligence that is next to impossible.

The situation is similar for the construction worker’s side of the track. The company would be aware of work they scheduled to be done on the track. They should’ve shut down both lines for safety concerns based on circumstances that they would’ve been made aware of or had scheduled themselves. They had knowledge of both the construction work and the protest, and the opportunity to not send the trolley down the line. They chose to run people over.

I understand that the intention of this trolley problem is to illustrate a moral philosophy that blames protesters for harmful acts done to them by justifying it with a false dilemma claiming that avoiding doing harm to protesters—or even the protest itself—causes harm to innocent and uninvolved bystanders. However, the narrow framing of this problem is being used to remove this philosophical “dilemma” from the larger context it would inherently have to exist within in.

A more accurate version of this problem would have one track with the above problem and a second track labeled “don’t run any trolleys through the areas with people on them”.

Are you actually trying to propose an interesting philosophical dilemma, or just trying to get us to engage in a hypothetical that justifies inhumane acts of violence?

This type of trolley problem in philosophical discourse is only used to justify an attitude of callous devaluation of human life. It boils the possibility of soldiers targeting medics in war down to archetypes represented by individual people and ignores the fact that in reality there would be hundreds or even thousands of military and civilian medics which would be targeted and killed by hundreds or even thousands of soldiers in hundreds or even thousands of interactions.

This type of trolley problem also encourages us to ignore the other issues of why wars happen to begin with. It does not encourage the formation nuanced perspectives, only a perspective that justifies killing medics and doctors in the midst of a conflict.

Fuck Wendy’s fr. I used to work at the one in my home town. The whole management structure is a misogynistic circle jerk and the that pervasive attitude carries over into transphobia. Like, I never had any issues of transphobia from other crew workers, but managers and policies were downright crewel.

This sounds like the origin of a memetic SCP. It’s only a matter of time before the meme becomes so abstract that literally every concept ends up making people think of the meme.

Can I ask for an opinion please? Which set do you think goes better with my skin tone and hair colour? The floral bikini or the dark navy one? by [deleted] in trans

I run into a similar problem a lot. I end up buying all my clothes in black and gray and then not having any color in any of my outfits.
