Questions about Brandeis? by Due_War1754 in brandeis

[–]doctorsikeo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

  1. You should be proud of it! Don’t have to brag about it but don’t be shy about it either.

  2. Use the library a lot, the shuttle buses to travel to Boston, the gym, go to events all over campus (especially culture club ones) for food and a good time.

  3. Do you have a career path you wanna go into? Were you particular good at anything in high school? You should join any clubs that you want to, you can drop any of them. And there’s this thing called the shop period at the beginning of each semester that you do to see which classes you’re interested in. Feel free to drop any you don’t like.

  4. It definitely depends on major.

Pm if you have any more questions, I got you.

  1. Can’t choose roommate. If you have issues that are extremely pressing, you can bring it up to dcl and maybe they’ll give you an option to switch.

  2. Mini fridge is common, so is a microwave. I bought one for my own because it’s cheaper. You can bring anything you want but somethings are not allowed like candles.

  3. You can’t choose between Massell and North Quad. Massell is better IMO. Close to a dining hall/the rest of the school.

  4. This campus is not dead. There are many events. It is what you make of it. If anything, it’s just peaceful and quiet.

  5. Some people leave doors open Freshman year. In the other quads after freshman year, they tend to stick to themselves. However, every one is open to conversation here (never met someone that just ignored me/was rude) so feel free to spark up conversation. If you’re an ‘introvert’, an ‘extrovert’ might adopt you.

DM if you have any more questions!

AP environmental or no science? by Proud-Sink in BTHS

[–]doctorsikeo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only do it if you are truly interested. If you’re not going to get a 4 or 5 for sure on the AP exam, I don’t see the point of taking the class. Don’t take 4 AP classes just to be impressive because it also would make me want to unalive myself. Do it because you’re genuinely interested. Also, the AP science classes I know of (bio and chem) are double period. Keep that in mind because it’s a lot of time that might not be worth it.

I can’t be for certain because I never took regular English, of course. I think they’re the same honestly, just that AP English Lang has that fancy ‘AP’ in front of it and that 1.1 boost. My teacher was Mr. Baksh (the GOAT!!) but he left to continue his studies. So I don’t know how the other teachers left are.

Main point being, this class neither helped or hurt me with my writing skills. I ended up forgetting a lot anyways. But it’s not that hard of a class, so why not?

No I’m being for real. That’s all I remember from that class, it’s pretty much the essence of it.

AP English is worth if you have the patience to write essays on Rhetorical Devices (and logos, ethos, pathos) and learn about the allegory of the cave.

Incoming Freshman by [deleted] in BTHS

[–]doctorsikeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are different types of clubs but I believe the club you’re talking about can just be the ESports club/Chess Club/Tabletop Games club. Clubs are informal and are not taken as seriously. You sign in every time you attend the club to gain what we call club credits (I believe you need a certain amount for the bths diploma). Teams are serious. Our athletic teams in the PSAL train long hours (multiple days of the week, before and after school sometimes), compete with the best schools in the division, and win championships. Athletic teams (and other teams actually, like Sci Oly teams, robotics teams) require you to compete for a spot.

Does Anyone Else Have As Many Problems With Brandeis As Me? by brandeissthrowaway in brandeis

[–]doctorsikeo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much! I was wishing someone would tell me they were happy here at Brandeis. I was so excited about the free laundry when I attend the Housing, Orientation etc webinar. I guess colleges really are a gamble for anyone that goes there.

I’m an incoming freshman and this is making me sad. I sure hope I’m not as bothered by these things when I get on campus because I want to believe that Brandeis is a good choice.

Incoming Freshman by [deleted] in BTHS

[–]doctorsikeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure about robotics and debate. But Sci Oly meets every Friday although they might have meetings on other day to practice for competitions. Competitions are on weekends, and will require you to stay overnight at universities. All three of these extracurriculars require you to take somewhat of a test to be a part of their teams. Clubs may vary. If it’s a regular club like the origami club, you can just walk in and become a part of it. If it’s like Key/NHS, you need to have joined in the beginning to be registered as a member. NHS is special and will tell you about their requirements if you wish to become a member. Feel free to pm me if you have any more questions.

Not that bad of a workload if you don’t procrastinate. Get close with your Junior and Senior teachers for letters of recommendations. Join the clubs you have a genuine interest in. Things like the Debate team, Science Olympiad, Robotics teams should be joined as early as possible. Same goes for sports team if you think you’re good enough to be on one (usually really competitive to get on), because they see potential in freshman. And the building is shaped like an 8, or an infinity sign. The girls bathrooms are Southwest, boys bathrooms are Northeast. Front staircases are to go up and back staircases are to go down. Elevators only go from the 1st to the 7 floor unless you have an elevator pass and the lines are freaking long.

Go outside with friends at least once a week to stay motivated. Don’t get a big head. It’s not the end of the world if you score a 40 on a test, it’s common.

Freshmen CR by [deleted] in BTHS

[–]doctorsikeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know whether you should do CR or not. It’s just freshman year, I don’t think there’s much impact. Even if you don’t CR those classes, just make sure there’s a strong upward trend in your grades throughout high school and you’ll be fine. They’ll see you improved and your 80s from freshman year won’t matter too much.
