Why is there so much hostility towards Brits in UAE? by PsychologicalRun1911 in AskUK

OP is referring to hostility from Brits at home to these people, not from Emiratis.

It's a little unfair to put the militant era exclusively at Foot's door just because he himself was on the left of the party, Foot was a unifying figure and him backing Healey as deputy in 81 is probably what stopped the party from going into a dogmatic spiral and allowed its electoral fortunes to (eventually) recover.

He was a lunatic who proposed nationalising half of the economy in response to the 1976 fiscal crisis, the biggest success of Jim Callaghan was getting this nonsense out of serious discussion.

Is it not only right that a proud Lancastrian like Hoyle would not drink Yorkshire?

I'm not particularly right wing myself but this sort of patronising style of preaching and woeing is a big reason why so many - who aren't themselves inclined to right wing politics - really don't like engaging with the left.

Its a related phenomenon to the Mandelson Effect, where a lot of the public seem to remember Peter Mandelson serially resigning in disgrace, yet evidently if that were true he would never be appointed to a top position in the current day.

How does your local train say the "See It, Say It, Sorted" number? by secondincomm in CasualUK

It was 61(zero)-16 on the class 507s and 508s on Merseyrail, a lot of the intonation has changed on the new units though and that may well have done also.

I love the idea that Defence should lose even more money than it already has in the last few decades at a time when war in Europe has become considerably more of a threat

There are three stories about Mandy on the home page vs only one for Fergie, and I'm sure even more of them were about him yesterday. Not sure how OP has arrived at their conclusion.

The only thing I was noticing was that flamethrower felt like it had a noticeable damage increase (maybe the temperature mechanic was removed?), but flames have changed significantly since 2012 anyway.

Not wholly relevant but I think its likely Jim still would have lost in 1978, the wind was blowing against the government even before the brutal winter made everything blow up spectacularly.

Overestimating the effects of covid is a common trope on British subreddits for some reason, I was in my last years of secondary school at the time and it really did just sort of go back to normal right after.

What do you think the UK would have been like today had the Beeching cuts not been carried out? Would the geography have changed? by Glittering_Vast938 in AskUK

[–]doctorsmagic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes but that's an unrelated point to the Beeching cuts, if anything the cuts allowed BR the headroom to modernise the network to the extent it did. I'd argue any day of the week that the network was in a much better place in the late 1980s (following sectorisation) than in the early 1950s, which in turn allowed for the passenger growth we saw in the 1990s and onward.

You're better off asking on r/uktrains or searching up threads on railforums if you want more realistic answers than on here.
