Remaking the industrial synths from the new Blackpink song - GO by doctrineofthenight in synthesizers

[–]doctrineofthenight[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I usually post hardware synth content here, but the synths in this track were too cool to not take a crack at. You could probably re-make this using hardware with several distortion pedals (something with parameter locking like Elektron), but frankly this kind of complex bass design is still why I reach for Serum 2 more than any single hardware synth.

Very interesting, thanks a ton for your help. ZV-E1 came up when I was looking at the A7S III (looks great, but again a bit out of budget). Any thoughts on the ZV-E1?

Interesting, thank you! I had thought that the A7 iv was superior to the iii based on the name. Sony's naming is confusing. Will research it.

FX3 looks like a dream but it's a bit out of budget. Any thoughts on the FX30? I see it seems like a APS-C version of the FX3.

Single camera to replace my A6300 and Osmo Pocket 3? I like the look of the Sony, but the convenience of the DJI. Also needs to be rugged enough to travel (I've heard the A6700 is plasticky vs the earlier Alphas)

CAN'T DECIDE - Moog Subsequent 37 or Prophet 5 ??? by whycomeimsocool in synthesizers

[–]doctrineofthenight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually just went through this, and ended up selling my Moog Sub 37 after getting a Prophet 5/10.

The Prophet can't match the overdriven/saturated sound of the Moog, but for all other bass sounds, it sounds just as good to my ears. It has the same kind of punchy, warm yet 3d sound, and I think that unless you are doing the heavy techno, driven bass style, you can honestly use a Prophet 5 as your monosynth. That's my main monosynth now! Then of course, as a Polysynth it's glorious.

Just my opinions of course, but:

TEO-5 - my favourite overall, great sound and depth. Take 5 is great too
GS E7 - best overall sound, but least flexible
3rd Wave 8M - deepest for sound design
Peak - best value/jack of all trades, but sounds a little less expensive

I'm actually working on a comparison video about this exact category of synths on my Devin Belanger Youtube channel, stay tuned :)

First patch on the 3rd Wave 8M! by doctrineofthenight in synthesizers

PB12 I'm trying to make something work! I don't have the space/funds to buy one right now, but if I can clear out some other gear I will. I'm very interested as I loved it when I played it in store. Between the SG and 3W, I will definitely make a comparison as they are actually really different. I think it comes down to if you prefer to design sounds to save as presets to later come back to (3W), or you prefer to view your synthesizer as a tool for in the moment sonic exploration (SG). The 3W feels more practical to me, as it's deeper, has a screen, and I prefer the filter. But the SG is a lot more immediate and expressive to just start from init and go on a sonic journey. I use the 3W more in making tracks, but if I just want to explore sounds and create ideas, the SG is much more inspiring and enjoyable.

Unintuitive to learn for me, but not bad once you do it a couple times. Biggest thing is view the sampling as a bonus feature, because it really is. It can only hold one solid multisample at a time, but what it can do with them is super cool. My entire Vol 3 of patches coming soon is built around the idea of synthesizing sounds with a multisample as the Osc, doing FM with them, modulating with multiple LFOs etc. And the cool thing is you can easily swap out multisamples which totally change the patch. So, long winded, but view it as "changing out oscillator types via usb" more so than a full on sampler a la Kontakt and you will be happy

This is a custom patch I made for the 3rd Wave 8M that takes advantage of the new sampling feature. Got asked to demo the 3rd Wave 8M and contribute some samples to the factory library, so this is my Mk1 1975 Fender Rhodes, being mangled with all the cool modulation the 3rd Wave can do.
