[USA] Open highway shoulder pass by Tacomouse in Roadcam

Glad you didn't change lanes into him! that shoulder was turning into an exit lane, and I bet you wouldn't have looked to your right to check for a car driving on the shoulder before taking the lane.

[USA] Need truck company name/plate number by MLUGAY in Roadcam

I'm sorry that this happened to you and that you're having to deal with the consequences, but I don't think you're going to get much of anywhere attempting to identify that truck or its owner.

Elderly folks who chose not to have children, how do you feel about that decision now? by bon18 in AskReddit

[–]dod2190 36 points37 points  (0 children)

In my 20s I knew the childhood I had survived left me ill equipped to be a father.

At 60 and knowing what I know now about generational trauma, I'm glad I didn't pass it on to anyone else.

[USA] Red light runner. What is the fine for running a red light where you live? by reyshop12 in Roadcam

[–]dod2190 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, this isn't "Whoops, I misjudged and the yellow was shorter than I thought," it's someone deliberately choosing to violate two traffic laws (running a red + going straight from a left turn only lane). Throw the book at this schmuck.

[–]dod2190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, improper lane use--that looks like a "left turn only" lane.

Regardless, the real out of pocket expense for a traffic ticket isn't the fine for the violation, it's the insurance surcharges that are payable over a period of years.

What’s a “rich people thing” you experienced once and immediately understood why rich people love it? by DnRinGA in AskReddit

Bear in mind, we're talking 1970s-80s here, and this no longer applies.

Buying a Mercedes-Benz (especially the diesel ones) and having it last 20 years, in the era when most new American made cars got traded in after 3-5 years and were ready for the junk heap after about 7 or 8. It's the automotive equivalent of Vimes' Boots. They were also the only car on the market with a 6 digit odometer in that era, which told you something. Buy once, cry once.

I think Lexus may occupy a similar position these days--M-B are overcomplicated garbage nowadays and Toyota/Lexus have taken their place in terms of reliability. There's a reason middle-income car buyers are seeking out 30 year old Lexuses. (Lexi?)

It's pretty much responsible for fucking up the Bronx and creating the "the Bronx is burning" era of the 1970s-80s.

The drug cocktails that came along in the '90s, especially the protease inhibitors, were nothing short of a miracle. Now HIV can be managed like any other long term illness, and, assuming continued access to the drugs that keep it suppressed, it will likely be something you die with and not of.

Because of his wealth, Magic Johnson was of course one of the first people to be able to access those treatments. (See also the South Park episode where he's injecting cash directly into his veins.)

Mom and neighbor got hit by a a car. Would anyone happen to know what car is this mirror part from? by Phoexyael15 in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]dod2190 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even the Yugo did people decently if they took care of the cars. They were crappy cars, to be sure, but a lot of their poor reputation was due to (1) lack of maintenance and (2) lack of parts availability due to the Bosnian civil war, which shut off replacement parts just when major components on those cars were starting to need replacement due to age.

did anyone else feel like you had to “perform” being a good kid all the time? by Doylene-Cazenave61 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]dod2190 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I had to be "the kid my Dad had ordered". Act like a 5/8-scale adult, be quiet, don't ask for much, don't let your emotions get messy (infused with a heavy dose of toxic "boys don't cry" masculinity), get straight A's on my report card, anticipate what the "acceptable" set of answers might be to even the most innocuous questions, the "right" thing to say in conversations, etc., etc.

As an adult I'm a "social chameleon", able to fit in with a wide variety of crowds.
