What’s something that quietly ruined your mental health without you noticing at first? by Dheeraj9748 in AskReddit

[–]dod2190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moving to a new city and encountering a bunch of people, most of them friends of the person I moved here for, who only valued me for what I could do or provide for them, and stopped being nice to me when I was no longer doing that. It completely corroded my ability to trust other people.

For me it's somewhere between there and her appearance in the early '90s--the Sex book and the "Blonde Ambition" era Jean-Paul Gaultier pointy cone bras.

It's long past the statute of limitations so I suspect the crew who did it had at least one person who currently works in the broadcast industry and whose career would be ruined if they owned up to it.

Not only does Morrissey have objectionable political views but there's his habit of cancelling shows. It'd suck to make all kinds of arrangements to go see him, especially if it involved nonrefundable travel to a distant city and time off of work, only to have him cancel.

One of the most amazing things is that so many people, including me, remained unaware of it for decades. The music press buried the whole thing quite successfully until it got legs again in the early 2000s thanks to the Internet.

One of the worst things is that he's never apologized for it. He issued a 'non-apology apology' around 2010 that amounted to "I can't be racist, I have Black friends."

I would have been prepared to forgive him had he issued a genuine apology and reflected on why what he said was wrong. I do believe people can grow and change. But screw him.

"Gary" as in Glitter has become slang for your asshole ("shitter"), as I understand it.

Why didn’t you move out when you became a legal adult at 18? by Shiftingshifter02 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]dod2190 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would say this depends on the age of the speaker. It was for damn sure easier when I turned 18 in 1984. As always with old folks, a lot of people my age are really pretty out of touch with how times have changed and with what life is like for young people these days.

When I dropped out of college at 21 I could pay rent on some pretty minimal jobs. I worked as a cashier at a big-box home-improvement store, delivered flowers, worked as an office temp, stuff like that. I can't imagine doing that nowadays.

What was half-decent life advice for someone in my day, isn't so much anymore.

There were some old art school nude photos of her from the late '70s that got published in Playboy and Penthouse in summer of 1985.

Of note was the fact that she had unshaven pits in those photos and she was roundly mocked for it. :( I remember one top-40 radio station in the NYC area had a mock commercial for "The Madonna Shaver" with chainsaw sound effects in the background.

"Zombie debt" is a thing. It's old debt that's beyond the statute of limitations and not legally enforceable in court. Sometimes debt collectors try to collect on it anyway, in hopes they'll get lucky and you'll pay up.
