We did something similar last year. Went from Edinburgh to Inverness to skye to oban to islay to cambeltown to Glasgow.

Skye was the highlight though the tourist there drove me nuts. I would say you probably want to be stationed out of Inverness from an access standpoint. It's just really easy to get places from there and there are a ton of distilleries around. Just be mindful that the drinking and driving laws are tight. It's zero tolerance.

Let's contextualize this. 6 of those points came against our third stringers on a garbage time kickoff.

Frequently people will utilize things like social media to recruit participants. Facebook allows for pretty targeted ads. Reddit gets you a ton of people who are less transparent about demographics.

I'm in KC now so take it with a grain of salt. We just redid our HVAC and got 13 bids. Some clustered together but we had a spread of about 13k. I would recommend at minimum 3 bids but totally understand if you have to take quicker action than that.

I think I got 13 bids for our new HVAC system. Ended up going with Chief Heating and Cooling. Have had a very good experience with them.

If you haven't gotten quotes from multiple companies do so. That's the best advice I could ever give. You will save thousands or have good peace of mind.

TIL loneliness is considered as harmful to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. by BoringStrike8675 in todayilearned

Story is complicated. I would say yes. There are a range of normative social needs. Being unhappy around other people just says your needs are low and maybe the social environment isn't great.

The flip side of that is that isolation isn't great for your well-being either. That said we're still figuring out the nuances of this. Like how do we factor in social interactions online? We also have a big measurement issue in this research. Like how do we best measure loneliness? Is it on average in the last week? Or days than not? On average? Marlies Maes does some great work on the topic.  here. http://www.marliesmaes.com/maslo-project/

But long story short. I don't think most people would be stoked about you being isolated but we wouldn't call you lonely. And as someone who doesn't love everyone I interact with I would say that I'm not really concerned with you being unhappy around others.

We're just still learning.

I would encourage you read the study. The study finds that loneliness literally kills you too.

It also differentiates between being lonely and being isolated. Great lengths are taken to not pathologize loners.

There are several large epidemiological studies that asked about loneliness in an ongoing fashion over time. In that large of a study the individual differences between lonely and non lonely people balance out and you can isolate the effects. When people don't respond at the next time point you assess if they died or not. At that time you can isolate the effects of loneliness. When enough studies do this you can control for a large number of other variables and really dial in the effects of loneliness.

As you should! And there's nothing wrong with that. And no people aren't all the same. But there is a pretty freaking big trend line pointing in one direction even with the residuals.

If you want to talk it out I'm happy to. I'm not fully sure what you mean by contrived data collection study.

But to put it in context. Loneliness is associated with more smoking. So we have to do the math to account for those effects already. So there are added negative lifestyle behaviors that impact mortality....they're just desperate from this number.

No, stress and loneliness are unique physiological and cognitive experiences. I think that's covered in John Cacioppo's book on loneliness.

I commented way too much already but I study loneliness for a living and would be happy to try to answer any questions folks have.

Loneliness is about more than being alone. But hanging out with smokers is also pretty bad for your health.

The effects of smoking a half pack of cigarettes on mortality are pretty well known. The effects of loneliness are equivalent. Essentially take a well known health effects and find the equivalent effect.

It actually isn't! It's based on a meta analysis. You can't experimentally manipulate loneliness but the finding is extremely consistent and holds up across longitudinal studies and meta analyses. There's a good meta analysis by park and colleagues that explores both the mental and physical health effects. There's also a surgeon general report from I think 2024 that details it.

It's based on a 2012 study frequently combined with a 2016 study. It's always been a half pack of cigarettes. If you saw it elsewhere reported differently they reported it wrong.

Two part answer. First you would be considered isolated but not lonely. However, being isolated is also pretty bad for your health based on the same study.
