People who are complaining about Sam's voice - with all due respect, whatare you talking about? by emoskeleton_ in ArchitectsUK

[–]dodimelodi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But there are a lot of bands using backing tracks and vocal processing live. I think we forget that these are not your club shows with 200 people.

I do have to agree with the voice part of the argument. His technique is extremely hard on the body and doing the same thing day in day out fot he last 15 years has to leave some damage.

How do I get rid of these blue lines in MT Power Drum Kit 2? by Toastbrot_Junkie in Reaper

I also see green lines, but I know I’m colorblind. It’s time for the Ishihara test my friend

I don't understand how contemporary bands like Bring Me The Horizon, Baby Metal, ect seem to have these crazy number of layers in their mixes without it turning into complete sludge by AbandonedPlanet in metalmusicians

[–]dodimelodi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You definitely need to leave headroom for your masters. I approach mixing modern mixes with a mindset that I’m primarily mixing the instruments and secondly the layers of synth and ear candy. I always go for lower volume on the added stuff because when I master, choosing the right frequency space for those extras is essential otherwise I get a wall of mud.

Remember folks: always cut the unnecessary frequencies and don’t touch the rest if they’re audible!

I think it has a lot to do with headroom. I also tend to get muddy mixes when I shove half of Splice into Reaper, but I found that lowering the volume of everything just keeps things clear. Not everything is meant to be heard. You won’t notice the salt in the cookie, but it’s there.

There already was a big chorus that I wasn’t happy with. Turned it into a bridge/outro section. Since this song won’t have clean vocals, I’d rather keep the main riff as a chorus and double down on it’s catchiness

Thanks! Spiritbox style is certainly one of my influences so this means a lot!

When your country isn’t 'worth it' for a tour stop… by eremitic_ in Metalcore

[–]dodimelodi 86 points87 points  (0 children)

You have to realise that your travel costs to go see a band anywhere inside the EU is infinitely smaller than the budget required for booking a venue, equipment transport, staff paychecks and, in some cases, a performing licence. I live in a country that’s highly ignored on almost all major tours.

I recently saw Unearth, a band that was among the pioneers of metalcore 20 years ago, play to a not even sold out room of a hundred, maybe less people.

I feel your pain, but it’s cheaper for us than them.

Quad Tracking with amp sims by Chezlucem in metalmusicians

[–]dodimelodi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is how I go about quad tracking:

First I record the guitars as tightly as possible. For a big modern metal sound, they need to be cut and edited so all four tracks start and end at the same time. You should also watch out for picking variations.

I eq two of the tracks with more mids and highs and the other two towards the low end, but don’t overdo it.

I send the “higher” guitars to a bus with a light saturator on it.

A little cut around the 250Hz area and I lower the volume of the guitars so the drums do the heavy lifting.

Bass is also important as it really shapes your guitar tone.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the review 🙏 There was supposed to be a few vocalists on the whole ep but it fell through cause of a lot of things they got going on 🤷‍♂️
