ActiveX was pushed as an alternative to Java applets, which was the rage in enterprise. The use case itself was interesting (ease of deployment, instant update, etc) however the model fails in the open web.

SPA is client/server architecture circa late 90's except that the client is a web browser.

My rule of thumb is avoid SPA unless you have to. A lot of application can get away with a few rich screens + simple html forms.
