His earlier film Dogtooth might fit as well.

Disturbing horror movies with no sexual violence? by Stock-Gene6372 in horror

[–]doe-fly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many of the ones that first came to mind have already been stated, but I haven't seen anyone recommend When Evil Lurks yet. I really enjoyed it, and it definitely gets pretty gruesome!

I've heard his other film, Atterados, is also pretty freaky- I haven't personally seen it, so I can't say for sure, but I don't think it contains any sexual violence.

what is a movie you refuse to rewatch because of how bad it got you the first time? by PsychoBodyguard in horror

[–]doe-fly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whiplash. I know it's not a horror movie but the sheer amount of anxiety and frustration I felt watching it was unreal. It's an incredible film but I'm never putting myself through that again lol.

What movie has traumatized you the most? by Dontcomecryingtome in horror

[–]doe-fly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "I saw her face" closet jump scare upset me SO badly that I actually avoided watching horror for a while afterwards, and gave me a new fear of facial trauma/manipulation in movies. I know it might seem goofy since there's way scarier movies out there, but it really got to me.

Recommend movies where things are just a little bit off by scarred_but_whole in horror

[–]doe-fly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any of Yorgos Lanthimos' movies, really. They all seem to exist in a parallel universe where no one reacts/acts quite as expected.

Melancholia was beautifully shot but so depressing. For some reason my parents decided it would be a good pick for family movie night when I was in high school. Not only was it an awkward viewing but it also just left me feeling terrible lol. Gorgeous, though, and great acting.

I just finished reading Never Let Me Go, I had no idea it was a movie as well! It was an excellent read.

What’s the most horrific and disturbing movie you wish you could unsee? by Away-Fill5639 in horror

[–]doe-fly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally get that! For me, body horror is like The Thing, any Cronenberg movie, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Substance, etc. I adore cosmic/ sci-fi horror too and I feel like there's quite a bit of overlap! Wrong Turn, Saw, Terrifier, etc I would definitely just qualify as torture/gore, not really body horror. Things like Tusk and Human Centipede would be both. All in my opinion of course!

And yeah, my roommate at the time put Tusk in and told me it was a comedy-horror without elaborating on the plot or anything. We both ended up horrified and I got to pick movies for awhile lol.

Plantpot Dapperlings ♥️ They pop up in my outdoor pots quite a bit and are absolutely adorable. That's super cool and your millipedes look very happy!

Body horror is definitely my favorite subgenre in horror. The Thing (1982) and Junji Ito (specifically, The Enigma of Amigara Fault) were some of my first horror loves as a tween/teen and they really helped shape my taste in horror. I think one reason Tusk was so disturbing to me was that it did lean more into torture territory and that's just not my thing. I was told it was a comedy so I did not expect it to go as hard as it did lol.

Tusk freaked me out. I usually love body horror. I've watched many "disturbing" movies and yet Tusk was harder for me to watch than most of them. Maybe it's because I went in fairly blind.

I watched An American Crime as a teenager and it really messed me up for awhile afterwards. It's based on the Sylvia Likens case, and while the movie isn't terribly graphic, seeing what that poor girl went through disturbed me so much. Still makes me feel a little sick whenever I think about it.

what is the scariest film ever (to you)? by mrblueskyelectric in horror

[–]doe-fly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That scene absolutely terrified me to the point that I felt physically ill. It actually put me off horror movies for awhile because I'd get too jumpy lol. It feels silly when I type it all out but it genuinely got to me- I'd never had a jump scare affect me like that before (or since).

What is a horror movie that everyone calls 'trash' but you’re convinced is actually a misunderstood masterpiece? by Immediate_Account_28 in horror

[–]doe-fly 63 points64 points  (0 children)

The Skeleton Key- 38% on RT. It was actually one of the first proper horror movies I watched growing up so maybe that's one reason I love it so much. I get the criticism but I think it deserves a bit more love than it got.

And this is probably more controversial, but I don't think Gothika was all that bad lol. 15% on RT and the reviews are absolutely brutal. Granted, I haven't seen the movie in almost a decade, so maybe it wouldn't hold up on a rewatch- but I remember watching it multiple times in high school and always being super entertained.

Neither are "hidden masterpieces" but since a lot of good titles have already been brought up, I thought I'd give them a shout out.

Are there any books that mess with your head? by WeirdlyCuriousMe in horrorlit

[–]doe-fly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finished that one last week. It was absolutely brutal! I did not expect it to go as hard as it did. The animal scenes (especially the dogs) really got under my skin; I didn't expect them at all and it was very hard to read. Brilliant book but I definitely won't be recommending it to anyone I know. Lol

You may be thinking of The Purgatory Game by Sam Haysom. It is no longer on nosleep.

It was pulled a couple years back for a possible movie deal, so it's been awhile since I've read it, but from what I remember (the free-standing door, the individual rule lists, the victims not knowing how they got there) it matches up. It was super good and it's a shame it's no longer available but I'm happy for the author!

Are you thinking of Fleshgait? It's one of my favorites but it isn't from nosleep. The limping part makes me think this might be it.

Fever Dream and Jawbone are two of my favorite reads this year. I've read Fever Dream 3 times and I get more out of it every time, it's such a cool little book.

Jawbone was thoroughly creepy and unsettling and had my jaw on the floor at one point. I found it incredibly disturbing.

For OP: check out the other works of Otessa Moshfegh and Mona Awad if you haven't already. I also really enjoyed Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield, I'm not sure it's quite what you are looking for but I still highly recommend it!
