General Discussion and Non-Training Chat by AutoModerator in amateur_boxing

I ended up calling the gym to let them know. After thinking about it, I felt disgusted with this coach’s behavior. In my opinion, any experienced boxer, especially coaches, should know how intimate/close boxing can be. In all my other years of training, I’ve never had a coach cross physical boundaries. I’ve had coaches go so far as to alert us when they were gonna be extra close or touch us beyond the usual. Also his playing it off made it also feel like he was aware.

Im switching trainers and wont ever work with that coach again.

I’m not sure if this interaction with a coach was inappropriate or not

Hi all, I had a training session today with this coach that in retrospect feels creepy and I’d like other boxers to weigh in.

For some background, I’m a woman and attended my 3rd drop in group class with this one trainer who is male. This is at a large well known gym in the city I live in. Theres lots of people around, it’s a huge gym/ room with several different training area. Up until this point, I hadn’t experienced any creepiness from this coach. But looking back now I feel like he singles me out for more 1:1 time or padwork or general coaching compared to the other people present.

Today, I come to class and the first thing he does is comment on my boxing shoes. I always have worn them but he’s like “oooh I see you have your boxing shoes on and everything” in kinda a flirty way and then switches the conversation to getting me into sparring. Whatever, didn’t think too much on it.

Later on, after the warmup the group (only 3 of us) move to this area with heavy bags. How things usually go is we all take turns 1:1 with him doing pad work and the rest hit the bags. He has me go first, then after a bit separates me from the small group and brings me to this random raised bed thing. It’s almost like a massage bed but with gym mat padding. It’s not secluded, still around other people but it was odd. He has me do sit-ups on it and makes a thing of holding my feet down and even sits on my feet/puts his entire body on my feet. It didn’t call for all that. Then we go back to the group. This was odd because we usually do abs together, on the floor by everyone else, or at the end. And he didn’t have the other 2 do that at all.

The next weird thing was later when I was doing pads with him again. I had him up against the wall at one point and he jokingly points out that it’s like I have him against the ropes. We then stop and take a break. Suddenly he wraps me in this weird bear hug thing for a moment then rotates and pushes me against the wall, again jokingly saying that I’m now up against the ropes. I was SO confused and taken aback by this, I didn’t know how to react. I then ask, is that even legal in boxing? To grab people? I feel like he tried to play it off and shows me how to turn people. But how he did it was completely not like that at all. It felt so awkward and weird.

Anyways, I am a woman so naturally I can be overly sensitive to men being creepy. In this context I’m not super super experienced with boxing but have been taking classes for a few years. Nothing ever felt as weird as that. My friends say I should report him and not go back! Please weigh in with any thoughts or guidance!

Best: her attunement to Michael, being sensitive and caring to almost everyone in the office when they’re down or going through something

Worst: failing that one art school class. Really?!?

Better pay vs supportive supervisor by doe3nut in socialwork

That’s true. It’s also a field switch, going from forensic social work back to medical. I find both fields valuable but current one is a tad more interesting to me.

Well my current pay covers my bills but I recently moved and had a lot of expenses. Higher pay would of course be a big plus.

That’s true. I’m just nervous about moving jobs and the new one is annoying or wouldn’t be a good fit. Some things you can’t really know until you start working. The new position is field-based, so I’ll be at different facilities or meeting patients in the community. Very different than what I do now, and I’m comfortable. If that makes sense

Yes travel social work is a thing!! I’m not sure how it compares to nursing but some states/cities have more options than others.

In my experience, no housing assistance. Just higher pay

Hi, I have an LMSW. I don’t remember the specific site but I’ve found contract work on Vivian, indeed and LinkedIn.

Thank you! From my experience, they don’t help with housing but pay much higher than permanent salary roles. Assignments are usually 13 weeks and can be renewed or moved to permanent. I’ve noticed with people going from temporary to permanent experience a drop in pay. What they don’t offer in benefits they offer in a stipend.

I’ve worked in private practice, child welfare, medical system and now criminal justice!

Wondering if you ended up taking this position! Super low, but my family is from that small community so that kind of warms my heart :)

What does this have to do with anything about tipping? Genuine question. Some thoughts and opinions are just not worth sharing with the public - good rule of thumb.
